Hello everyone. I've been reading posts for a few weeks. There is a ton of helpful information here. Thanks to all who have shared their knowledge and experiences. I figure that it's about time to introduce myself. My name is Kym and my new baby sulcata is 5 weeks old. His/her name is Zippy because it's very curious and moves quickly to check out new things in his (plastic) tank. I have a small 10-acre farm. It's just a hobby farm in southern Ohio - zone 6b. Zippy lives in the house, in the warm room where parrots reside (in cages unless taken outdoors for sunshine) but in the future years I would like to build Zippy an outdoor habitat. Our winter months are very short and mild (no snow but night temps can drop to freezing) but I will provide heated indoor space for him/her.

I feel that I'm set up on all the necessities and look forward to a long relationship with Zippy. I am happy to be a member here because I am sure that a few questions will popup over time. They always do regardless of what critter we caring for.

Thanks for allowing me to join.

Thank you for joining. The more the merrier. It means this site is making a difference in the lives of tortoises and I'm sure that's their main goal. That's an adorable little tortoise.?

Hi and welcome,
Have you found the caresheet for sullies yet in the species specific section?
There's always someone around to help if needed or just to chat chat with and we love to see photos of torts and enclosures.
Looking forward to seeing more of Zippy.

Hi and welcome!

Is that a cuttlebone I see in the picture? It looks like you have the hard side up. Turn it over so the soft side is up.
Thank you. I will turn it. Zippy moves it around on his own. I didn't realize that there is a soft and hard side. I appreciate the information.

I also used a zester tool from the kitchen to make a little bit of powder from it. I sprinkle that on his food a few times a week.

Thank you. I have heavy equipment here so the task won't be too strenuous. I've built little cottage type buildings for the parrots and monkeys and they are doing well. My only issue is electrical outages. I need to be home to start the generators in the colder months. I might switch to solar at some point. This will the first time that I need to build a solid wall starting a couple feet below ground. Money will be the issue but with a backhoe it won't be hard.

You don’t have to start your wall underground.. Sulcata’s don’t dig out. They do burrow but that’s a totally separate deal.
