parthenogenesis

As you may or may not know, parthenogenesis is the process of a female, turtle, snake, tortoise plant(organism) etc. being able to make genetic copies of themselves without fertilization. Most turtle and tortoise species are able to store sperm as a survival tactic so they don't require to mate seasonally. My question: Is it possible for an animal to experience parthenogenesis without ever mating? Let me know your thoughts:)

In high school biology we learned of a lizard species that does this. I've never heard of any chelonian that does it.

BTW, that is one of my all-time favorite words. I don't know why, but I just like that word. There is a song from an 80s band called Shriekback that uses the word.

I like saying it randomly as well as hypotranslucent ?

They do indeed have venomous salivary glands:
I have inside info. As I said, I don't think they do. I think an ambitious grad student found a salivary gland and wanted to make a name for himself.

Parthenogenesis is fertilization without sperm. All such offspring are female.

In-ver-te-brates do it.
Snakes do it.
Even tongue-flicking lizards do it!



I've never seen a reference to Chelonians doing it...

I saw what you did there, ZenHerper!! (Even educated fleas do it!??) ??

This has been well documented not only in Komodo but other varanids as well. It’s very much true and not a result of just one grad student. The study has been repeated several times.

parthenogenesis, by definition, does not involve mating at all. It has never been documented in Chelonians. It has nothing to do with stored sperm, or sperm at all. It is genetic copying by a female. So to answer your question, yes. Parthenogenesis ONLY occurs without successful mating.
