Hello!

I am a new tortoise owner and attached is my new little cherry head red footed tortoise named Hermann.

I grew up raising turtles, but am excited to raise my first tortoise!

Hermann is 4-5 weeks old and about 2 in long. I have a picture of his home which I hope is not to big for him right now. I have only had him a week, and have some questions/concerns that to make sure I am not making any mistakes early on.

Looking forward to learning more about how to keep this little guy thriving and talking with all of you!! :)

Hi, and welcome!

We have a couple of very good care sheets on Redfooted tortoises. You can find them pinned towards the top of our redfoot section.

So I am approaching a year of having Hermann, and he is growing a lot faster than expected! His current favorite thing is when it isn't cold outside, he gets in his play pen and climbs on top of his house to (this is only a guess) plan his escape since he is not quite big enough to get over the walls. We have to watch him close because boy does he try getting on his tippy toes in attempt to escape.

His favorite food is watermelon, second to his mazuri tortoise food. I keep looking for new things for him to try to make sure he is getting a variety of food though.

He makes me super happy so I just wanted to share an update and thank everyone on this forum because it had been so helpful!!

What a cutie!! I like to think trying to escape is another form of getting exercise, like their soaks, but it ups my angst when I don't see Houdini immediately. I love that mat enclosure. Where did you get it?

It is a child's playpen my boyfriend found on Amazon.

Baby Play Mat with Fence, Animals, and Foam Tiles. Tummy time mat, Playmat for Kids, Toddlers, Infants. Activity Center, Ball Pit Gym Floor playpen. 57"x 57", Over 74" Across! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LGSQZS8/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20

Like this, but much smaller. It is easy to clean and Hermann loves running around in it. :)
