Hello! My name is Christina, I am from Los Angeles, CA. I'm currently taking care of a roughly 2.5 year old Redfoot Tortoise. He was my grandmother's pet, but she was recently put into a nursing home and can no longer take care of him. I am taking care of Milton now, however, I live in a small apartment with a roommate and we just don't have the space and means to care for him the way he deserves to be treated.

I obviously do not want him to go to the Humane Society or give him away to a stranger without knowing that they know what they are doing and can take care of a delicate reptile. He is very close to my heart, and as much as it pains me to think about giving him up, I feel that it would be best for him to go to a rescue or sanctuary of some kind where he can be loved and taken care of properly. Does anyone have any recommendations in the Southern California area, preferably within an hour or two of Los Angeles? I would like for it to be a reputable rescue that either finds new, trustworthy homes for their rescues, or one that will keep him and treat him as one of their own. One of my concerns is that he is still quite small and most rescues I've seen online have much older, larger tortoises. Also, I haven't seen many Redfoots compared to other breeds. Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Christina

@Yvonne G is up in Clovis, near Fresno, but she may know someone down that way who can help. I have 6 redfoots, but I'm wayyyyy too far north to be useful.

Hi Christina:

There are several chapters of the California Turtle and Tortoise Club in Southern California. They have pretty strict adoption rules and can be trusted to place the animal is a safe home. Here's a link to the chapter site:

Thank you for the resource, @Yvonne G. How would you recommend approaching them about this? I feel almost guilty giving him up to an organization that probably already has so much on their plate. Would you recommend offering a donation?

Also, thank you to @ZEROPILOT and @MPRC for your recommendations! I really appreciate it!

Donations are always welcome, but they'll gladly take the tortoise without it. I know they usually have quite a number of desert tortoises needing homes, but I think the RF tortoise would be sort of scarce.

I wouldn't surrender an animal to a "rescue" without such a recommendation.
I've found at least one "rescue" here in south Florida that is just some guy who hoards tortoises and then resells them

I would agree with Zeropilot. I have also seen animal hoarders that call themselves "rescues". Please be extremely cautious who your tortoise goes to.

Hello Christina,

My name is Emily and I am currently looking for a friend for my yellow footed tortoise Link he is also about 3 years old. I have made a tortoise table for him with plenty of room for a friend. My husband and I are also saving for a house and I will build an out door enclosure for him. I had worked in a veterinary office for about 7 years and have a lot of knowledge on how to take care of animals. If you are up to it i would like to adopt him or her. I am located in Hesperia but i can drive out to you.

Thank you for your time hope to hear back from you,

Emily

I would not recommend housing a Redfoot and Yellowfoot together in any size enclosure. Or even two of the same species together.
Mixing species is dangerous and tortoises don't need or want friends.
In a HUGE enclosure, a group of Redfoot can work.
So can a group of Yellowfoot.

What is that rescue if you don’t mind me asking so I can avoid it? My dad has been talking about possible temporary giving away my tortoises until we move and I’m not sure what the best place to do that would be .. thanks

Tortoises should not be kept in pairs and species should not be mixed.

Your best and safest thing to do is go with Yvonnes recommended rescue.
Good luck.
