But Chef is such an appropriate name for a tortoise--Demanding, Needy, Inflated Over Sense of Self, Grandiose Ideas, and Stubborn oh so stubborn. How does that not describe a tort- always want you to feed them, we have to do everything for them, bullying and dry humping, big tortoise small opening you have seen the pictures, and of course they know its a fence but the still push it until it opens for them like it does you!

I think you are 100% correct on that -I'm sure he will be much happier, even though he can't thank you himself.
 She would not let me take him home. She said he will be fine, he is just a tortoise. ?? Unfortunately, she has full custody and I only have visitation rights.
??? If I try to take him, it would amount to "stealing", it does not matter if he is being abused or not, he is not mine to just take if I choose.

I know. @Jan A still got that trash can lid? @maggie3fan no need to bring the IROC, got an SS 454 here, geared down to 3.11 with posi track. None of these young ones believe a 3.11 actually existed.

That's terrible !!! I'm so sorry - for both you and him. Can you get any of the other staff to back you up? How about suggesting you "rent" him from her ?

WOW I new a girl who's dad had a real Cutlass 454 and it was a monster. Scariest ride ever was a 1965 stock Mustang with 289 3 speed. My buddy was able to break traction in all 3 gears and 3rd was always the worst. So what is the hesitation you already have a quintessential getaway car.

WOW! Sounds like fun! The car belonged to my father and believe it or not, it was an El Camino. All that speed and power and he would tell me "Donʻt lean against the door" instead of telling me to put my seatbelt on.

Yes, weʻll need a getaway car even though I live on an island and we can only go around in circles. But weʻll do it really fast!

Wait... now u dont have the sully??
You are correct, I do not have the sully. I only had custody for the weekend, then Monday cause I was sick. I brought him back to school Tuesday morning and was going to bring him home for the week cause itʻs still cool and super windy. She basically told me that I couldnʻt. I can, however, take him home again on Friday after school. Then bring him to prison on Monday, take him home again on Friday for the Spring Break. We need another plan. I asked Jan how she felt about the trash can lid, and Maggie about a car but so far no answers so far. Had a comment from Blackdog 1714 about the getaway car.

No, that IS nice ! and different??
Everybody is using the same old names.
Just take a real long look at your torts face... study it.. now....... what’s the first name you think of???
What does she look like to you?
When I got my tort I made the HUGE mistake of naming HIM Salvador (after the friend that helped me rescue him)......
23 years have passed....
and just last month Salvador...laid an egg??
There are no words.....
So now long story short I have changed it to Sally. Which I don’t like.
But I find myself calling her :
Pilaf
Pikachu
and mostly,
Monkey , little monkey and Punk Head. ?
“Come on little monkey! Time for nummers!” I find myself saying OUT LOUD IN THE YARD!!!! ?
Iʻve taken a long look at her picture and all I see is a smiling grass-stained mouth. :)

Love it! But Jan is decidedly quiet......

Just went to see the prisoner and hand-feed her some weeds. As soon as the kids came out she shriveled up into her shell, arms blocking her face. I was gonna go to the office and get my pepper spray but thought better of it, the wind is blowing so hard some might drift over to the tort. It is so windy that we need to hold onto our hats and skinny friends.

Perhaps she thinks it will be good for them to experience the death of something they care about - a good "educational opportunity"?
Angie
I know. I said earlier that I do not believe teaching animal husbandry to elementary kids is a good thing. One animal in one home ok. One animal at school with multitudes of kids "learning about it" without constant supervision, no. I shudder thinking about all the hamsters, guinea pigs, and other animals who suffered needlessly - and itʻ not just in our school. Think about the hundreds of schools out there that allow classroom pets.

I have been reading a lot elsewhere on this forum about this horrible fatal new disease which is spreading among tortoises and other reptiles (the one that is first visible with yellow lumps on skin)- tell her about this - it is quite possible that one of the kids might have a pet at home with it, or get to handle one somewhere , and pass it on to your one - tell her it isnt known if it infects humans (but it might), and that it would be very unwise to let anyone touch it or mess about with it - and perhaps wear rubber gloves yourself when handling the tortoise, to make your point clear. I am actually serious about this, though possibly exaggerating the danger.

Thank you, yes, Iʻve seen a lot about it as well. Iʻve told the principal about the kids possibly contracting salmonella since a lot of them donʻt know about it and about proper hygiene. I donʻt even know if any of the parents know that the tort is here and anyone can touch it at any time. I spoke to the principal about this too and she said if the kids get sick, itʻs on the teacher. But I donʻt think the parents are going to just be upset at the teacher, they likely will go to the top and start hell from there. Its so sad...I have the tort, I donʻt have him. I have him but I have to bring him back. I brought him back but now canʻt have him again. Iʻm sure everyone is just sick of my ranting. Not sure if Iʻm sad, frustrated, or just mad at this point. I really donʻt want to upset anyone about this anymore.

I'm so sorry this is dragging on this way for you, and I don't think anyone is going to mind you "ranting" about it - it is a very wrong situation for you and the tort. Do you know any of the parents, who might be interested to learn that their little darlings are having their lives risked in this way?

Same point I was going to make as well. I view the yellow bump disease (because I can't spell the bacteria name) as potentially harmful to all animals, if not humans too.
