Hello everyone i recently found out my yearling hermann was not getting enough minerals in his diet. I was giving him calci dust once a week and Nutrobal once a week. So i went ahead and ordered some miner-all to give to him and while waiting for it i was going to give a mineral suipplmement i had at home. But i just found out that that "mineral supplement only contains calcium and magnesium so i am going to stop using that since thats not what he's lacking. But i did go thru the ingredients for nutrobal and it turns out it contains some phosphurus. So should i start giving him more Nutroabal while waiting for the miner-all or just keep going with my clacium once a week and nutrbal once a week supplememntation which does not have enough minerals in it. Until the miner all arives next week or so?

What was the 'learning' in that you found out not enough minerals?

There are many pet multi-vitamin/mineral supplements out there. I use Vionate. But I also use chicken layer crumbles in the tortoises' diet, which has enough calcium (and other minerals) to support chickens laying eggs.

But so do you think it's fine if I just keep going with my old supplementation schedule for another week or so even though it does not have enoough minerals in it. Until the miner-all arives next week or so?

I believe that too much supplemention for tortoises is just a bad idea. I cannot count the number of chelonian I have had in my years of keeping tortoises, and I have used 2 supplements and that was because I was raising babies. I feel the necessary vitamins and minerals should come from their diet. I feed the best possible diet for me to provide. I made road trips out of town and hit up feed stores and farmer/ranchers and small mom and pop places when I first moved to Oregon, so now boxes of produce, flowers, cactus, etc is saved for me. Recently one of the ranchers gave me a bag of pasture grass. And my friend in Colorado also sends me stuff, and she sent pasture seeds to me also. All I have to do is go for a drive and make a few stops. I have a friend in Texas who sends me cactus pads. Anyhow, sorry I talked so much. My basic point is to feed the best diet you can, and getting that diet takes some work, supplements...add a pinch of calcium w/d3. I also use Minor all at times. But not so much

Ok sounds good as i said i give calcium once a week without d3 and then nutrobal once a week which conatins calcium and d3 among with some other things and i am also going to start using mner-all as said but i will take this into concideration to make sure i don't over supplement. It's only that where i live it's hard to get a really good diet this time a year but i try my best.

Please remember, it takes good UVB from bulbs or the sun to make the d-3 work.

I think something got lost in translation here. I don't know how to respond.
Yay14 has another thread on water dishes or should I clean my water dishes or some such a few days ago, which is what he could be referring to, &/or was concerned about "mineral" spots left behind in tge water dish.

I get confused in trying to keep it all straight.

Oh i meant that he was eating mineral deposits which is something that forms on terracotta pots often but for convinience sake i can just say he was eating rocks. Which is a clear sign of not enough minerals

In my almost 30 years of being around turtles and tortoises I have never seen or heard of mineral deposits on terra cotta pots or saucers.

I think I understand what is going on. If I notice any of my tortoises biting at something out of the ordinary I just give them some cuttle bone and that satisfies there need of calcium. I have a lot of oyster shells in my soil and that's what they bite on usually.

Regions with a lot of limestone underground will have issues with calcium build-up in water bowls, showers, planters. I grew up thinking that calcium in the water was normal. Now I live where there is weird pink bacteria instead ?

I see better. Many people use cuttlebone, I use CaCO3 mixed in with food twice a week. But I also use ZooMed grassland natural tortoise food, and Purina Mills organic Layer Crumbles in the food. The layer crumbles have enough calcium to enable a chicken to lay an egg everyday. A draw back of the crumbles is fiber content. I use moistened grass pellets tumbled with the layer crumbles to fill that 'lack of fiber' concern.
