Weelllll this is going to hell in a hand basket! @Blackdog1714 sent me an enlightening video and gave me some insight to parakeets @Chefdenoel10 has been trying to spare my property and sanity, and the pictures of Mary Knobbins aren’t photoshopped.I guess the only thing left is a stuffed rabbit. Hmpf ??????‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️
OOOH a thrift/secondhand store run. I am in! Maybe a giant concrete chicken or a life size cow----

Ok, so the sully is going back home today to a 3’ X 5’ garden bed in an open hallway with a red light clamped to the edge. Yes, it’s Hawaii but today it’s raining and about 66F and the wind is at around 20-30 mph. I have no idea what to tell his owner, I usually try to give helpful information and take care of him during work. I even take him out after work for a half hour to an hour so he can walk around and graze. He’s left alone during the weekend and I don’t think she feeds him. I’ve asked this before in a different thread without as much detail. I’ve given her the care sheets, but since her family has reptiles she thinks I’m going overboard. I only have about an hour and a half left before I go, hopefully someone is reading this real-time and can offer some help

We're "too hard core"? Because we talk about tortoises? ?
Cause we give people the straight poop ? and don't sugarcoat it. IT comes down to an ever expanding personality trait for not wanting to be told you are wrong. The true measure of person is not what they do in a situation, its what they do in a situation after they find out what they were doing was wrong/different from how the normally do it. Personal change is often associated with important events, conflicts, and tragedies. It is a very special person that sees a need to changes from just personal experience---This is where the fork, electricity, vehicles, space travel and tortoise closed chambers come from. And that is my 2 cents

Maybe I can find someone here locally unless @Chefdenoel10 wants another one, or I can get a wall, mineral rights...@blackdog1714

if that’s the case and the tortoise is being neglected, I immediately reply....
STEAL IT!!!
Then you friend can’t leave it in a hallway or mistreat it any more.
When asked I would reply ....
Geez.. who would steal a tortoise?
must have been someone who thought it was being “hard core” neglected??
Just an opinion...

when we were setting up his enclosure yesterday I talked about his needs again and asked her if she really thought it was fair. She said her family has sullys back in NY and compared to them hers lives “like royalty” I asked about roaming space and she admitted that the have an acre to roam but they live in dirt. I threw up my hands and asked if she this space was really enough. She thought about it and said she will think about rehoming him. Not sure if she saw the lust in my eyes. Will keep you posted, thanks for the replies!

I’ve seen a lot of that on posts here and thought I would never see crazy people like that. (I’ve seen her tin foil hat). I was in the receiving end of @Tom s wrath ( but he’s really mellowed, you think?) when I got my Russian. My sons Russian. Gotta change my username I think to grandmother. But anyway I’m glad she is considering rehoming him. If I can swing it I’d love to have him so I can see those cute feet and chubby legs everyday. And give him a better life.

Oh my, you are so profound this morning! Such deep thinking...you must have had extra coffee! ?

But caffeine induced or not, I do believe you've hit the nail on the head. We don't coddle keepers, though we do try to be kind at first. What we post must come from the viewpoint of what is best for the tort; not what is most comfortable, warm, and fuzzy for the owner.

The past few morings have dropped down to 60 degrees F, she took the CHE off and put a bulb in the enclosure cause it's too dark during the day - even with the floodlight I gave her. So at night the poor guy has no heat at all. I heard from some other teachers that a kid put him up on his hide to see if he woudl jump or fall off, and if he did, would he land straight down or on his head? One kid buried him to see how long it took for him to dig himself out, and another kid pressed his finger down on his shell to see how much pressure it took before the tortoise couldn't walk. I'm out of my mind! People are asking what I did to him because he grew so much. The owner keeps telling me how happy the kids are now that the tortoise is back. She is off today so I offered to feed the tort, she said thanks, that way shd didn't have to go into work just to feed him. ??????Sorry, I needed to vent to you.

I applaud your efforts to effect a positive change for your neighbor's sully. I really wonder about people who think torts are like dogs or just worth the minimal care. There's always an anonymous call to animal control authorities if nothing else works. Hang in there!!

i would have to step in and get help for him if I was you. That is animal abuse if I have ever heard it! When you go into feed him....
Take him home!
Then tell the teacher when you came to feed him he either passed away and you took him to bury or tell her you brought him outside to feed and he got away.
All the while ... he is living with YOU now.
You’d be a great mom!!! ❤️

Did you try printing a copy of the care sheet and giving it to her?

I'd be out of my mind if I was in your position! Have you just come out with it and asked her for him?

Yes @KarenSoCal, I’ve printed and given her the care sheets, pretty much told her that she isn’t treating her tort well. I thought I made some headway with our last talk where she said she would think about rehoming him. When she asked what I did to make him grow so fast it was a lightbulb moment. Uh I fed him and let him outside to walk around? She thinks he needs to be on a diet for goodness sakes! She asked me to watch him over Spring Break. Maybe I should keep him

yep, I think I’m gonna do the witness protection program with him. It breaks my heart when he hears my voice and comes out with those chubby feet and scratches at his enclosure to get to me (at least that’s what I think he’s doing - maybe I’m humanizing him too much) Just waiting for Spring Break. I don’t have a huge yard but hopefully he can at least stay till someone can take better care of him
