Hello everyone,
I am posting for a 14 year old girl named Lilly. Lilly took in a 7 year old female Sulcata two weeks ago that was being extremely neglected. I actually met Lilly on facebook in a group.. I saw she needed help and I wanted to see what was going on & what help she needed... I am in Florida, but Lilly & her tortoise live in Syracuse NY. When she got the 7 year old tort it was sick so Lilly & her Mom took Loka to the vet, found out she had a respiratory infection and was given antibiotics injections for her.. Loka weighs 28 lbs and is staying in the house full time especially because it is to cold outside now in NY. Lilly has a kiddie pool with dirt in it if Loka wants to dig, has a uvb light & basking heat light set up for her to go under anytime, she is eating great(Timothy Hay, Greens, also Lilly said she loves Aloe Vera), getting calcium weekly, pooping good and feeling so much better now.. However, Loka has now laid two eggs 3 days apart from each other. One she laid on her pillow under the basking light, and the other one she just laid in the middle of the floor. We don't think Loka has ever laid eggs before, and was not around a male tort so the eggs are non fertile. Lilly has read & did some research and is now very worried that Loka has egg binding because she only laid 2 eggs 3 days apart from each other. Lilly & her mom spent a bunch of money taking Loka to the vet when they got her 2 weeks ago for the respiratory infection, but since than, Lilly's mom is out of work due to work shutting down and Lilly's dad passed away recently so they do not have the funds to take Loka back to the vet for an x-ray to see if she could have egg binding.. My heart really breaks for Lilly, she already loves Loka and says she can't loose her.. She is afraid something is wrong. I am a "Grandma" and I can see the maturity that Lilly has & how much she is trying to do everything right.. It is a huge responsibility to take on neglected tort, but Lilly is doing a good job, does love her and Lilly's Mom really loves Loka too. Lilly has even reached out to every group possible that offers donations to help a pet in need so she could get the x-rays done.. The Vet is Dr. Wolfer at Liverpool Animal Health Center.

I have some photo's that Lilly gave me of Loka, the eggs she laid, and the medication she was on for the respiratory infection, her back area(cloaca)
What are the symptoms of egg binding?
Is it possible for Loka to have only 2 eggs to lay?
Is it normal to lay an egg 3 days apart from each other? .

THANK YOU in advance for anyone that responds.. I know I do not know this young girl, but I know she loves her tort, I know she is afraid of loosing her and really has it in her mind that Loka has egg binding and would need surgery.. I know she tried to post in a few groups on facebook and ask questions but I do not think anyone realized she is 14 years old, and they told her she was going to loose her tort if she did not take to a vet, that it was animal abuse for not taking it to a vet, etc etc.. AFTER I realized something seemed off, I messaged her, and than got the whole story of her only being 14, it is her & her mom, her dad recently died, her mom now just lost her job, and now Lilly is afraid she is going to loose another love(her tort)... My heart breaks for her, I know she is 100% taking the responsibility of caring for Loka, she did the injections herself, she feeds her, cleans up her poop, picks her up & puts her in the tub, and spends her days talking to Loka, and just hanging out with her. Loka needed Lilly just as much as Lilly needs Loka..

That is not a bad looking tortoise for the previous keeper not treating it well. At 7 years that tort should weigh 50 to 70 pounds. It will need a heated night box or shed as they do not hibernate and need warmth in the cold weather. It needs to be large enuf to give the tort walking room thru the NY winters. I live in the Pacific Northwest and keep my Sulcata in a heated and insulated 12'x20' tort shed. While I applaud the UVB light etc. Sulcata are a very active type tortoise and while a kiddie pool sized habitat is not bad for a hatchling or yearling, it ain't gonna be good for a 7 yr old tort. I have 2 tortoises in my shed, and daily I can hear Mary Knobbins banging the walls and if I let her out regardless of the weather, she will go outside the very second I open the door, once she grazes some and see's the weather is crappy she goes back inside and is ok with it. She will not eat hay or lettuces. She wants to graze. Big Sam eats hay, and won't go outside if it's cold, he does eat 1/4 of a hay bale thru our cold weather. I think Big Sam, is about 35 pounds and Mary Knobbins is 20. Both are rescues and were damaged before I got them.
I'm going to look for a care sheet for bigger Sulcata care, but don't give up, you will get good feedback.
I don't know about egg binding, but I do know I have a female box turtle who has never been with a male and she will lay 2 or 3 eggs around her habitat. You might tell her to take her pointer finger and GENTLY palpate right behind a rear leg, push gentle but feel like she's trying to feel inside her body at a rear leg, or get an $80 x ray at a Vet.
Here is Mary trying out her new doggie door and ramp

She was afraid to step off the ramp, so a step was added

Lilly only has the kiddie pool full of dirt incase Loka want to dig or lay more eggs.. It is cold & snowy in Syracuse NY and since she just got her 2 -3 weeks ago she has a room in the home for Loka to stay in. I know she said Loka was being neglected by not being fed or cared for. Maybe that is why she only weighs 28 lbs. I will tell her what you said about feeling in that area.. Exactly what will she feel is she has more eggs? Will it feel like a big ball their? I know since Loka had a RI when she got her and was on antibiotics, I am sure that is another reason why she decided to keep Loka inside instead of building an outdoor enclosure.. I do know many bring their torts in for the winter and keep them in the garage, basement, etc.. Loka has her own space with the UVB and Basking.. I just wish someone would talk to her instead of typing or messaging..

I really appreciate you tagging the members who can help.. I am hoping someone would be willing to talk directly to Lilly and help her.. Even if they know someone in Syracuse NY who would be willing to talk to her that would be awesome! I just wanted to help her, I could tell by what she was saying on facebook she was really reaching out, but was only getting attacked by others inside of someone offering to talk to her and to try to see what was going on.. For someone to just tell a 14 year old, you are also neglecting your tort and she will die shortly if you do not get her help is awful, HOWEVER, they had no idea she was only 14 OR that she just lost her Dad. Honestly tho, even if some of these people on facebook in these group knew that, it probably wouldn't matter because they are just ruthless! Thank you again, I appreciate you responding and I will wait to hear from the ones you have tagged.. I will keep checking back...

If she is egg bound, it would help if there were a place for the tortoise to sit quietly and warm up to 90F degrees or so - a light (not low enough to burn), a heater, a pig blanket, etc.

does she have a light fixture where she could screw in a “CHE” light bulb?
It is a bulb that emits heat with no light and that could warm her up tremendously giving her insides a chance to relax and get things moving. I’ll send a picture of the light bulb.
Also what kind of tortoise was it again?
Could you get her to buy orchid bark?
That’s a better substrate for sulcata.
A shallow saucer for water to drink
And a light fixture with a UVB bulb in it.
(That’s kind much but if she could do little by little). I totally understand she has no money and poor wee mom is laid off and about the daddy but these are things she is gonna need so the tort grows normally.
It has to be within the year she gets this stuff other wise she might run into other problems because she DIDNT have this stuff.... I am so sorry to say that.
I just wanted you to understand what THAT kind of tort needs...
We have to think of something though to help!!!!
For now I’ll get pics of bulbs for you to show her....
Keep us updated..!

here are some things I collected that she should try to get one by one....
I know it gets expensive but these are things she NEEDS As opposed to things she would like..
say it was a human being....
People NEED water
People DONT need showers.
Bad analogy I know but I’m just trying to get across the point that the animals body needs the elements from the light fixtures for its shell to grow and mature and keep away diseases and skeletal affects.
Maybe I’m saying this poorly.
I don’t want to scare the poopie out of you or her. But you did ask what she needed I think.?

here are some things I collected that she should try to get one by one....
Yes i have gone over several things with her. I have a Sulcata myself so that's why i was in a group where i saw her posting. Lilly told me she building an enclosure in her room and it will take up most of her room but she doesn't care because she loves her. Lilly also told me Loka is loving her basking light and she thinks she's never had one before. I'm going to go over what kind of enclosure she's building and if i have to order somethings online to ship to her home I'll do that so i know Loka has every thing she needs. I'll help since her mom is now a widow, single mom, and just lost her job... Thank you so much for your responses and caring

If she is egg bound, it would help if there were a place for the tortoise to sit quietly and warm up to 90F degrees or so - a light (not low enough to burn), a heater, a pig blanket, etc.
Loka has a basking light she sits under. Apparently there is a pillow under the heat light that Loka sits on and that's where she laid her first egg. Do you know if it is normal for a 7 year old Sulcata that never laid eggs before to lay only 2 but each one was 3 days apart? I wish there was a way to tell if she's egg binding. Loka isn't acting as she's trying to lay more or struggling as all? Lilly said she's never had a basking heat lamp so maybe that's why she laid her two eggs because she loves the one she now has.. Thankyou for your response and advice

I’m so sorry to say I know nothing about eggs and egg binding
but think of it this way ....
at least she got them out .
you say she’s no worse off and she’s walking fine ,eating fine ,pooping fine maybe it was just the move that got to her or the fact that now she has warmth
that she’s never maybe had before and it got things moving in her circulation ?
Having them just pop out it’s better than them getting stuck in there and then she’d have a real problem. Right?
Just keep her warm and fed and watered and give soaks like normal and wait to see if anything Out of the ordinary like if she gets lethargic or something seems wrong then I would take her to a vet don’t run to a vet now because they’ll just give her the runaround .
say she needs shots (which she doesn’t) and charge a lot of money for nothing. That’s why I say ...
I’m so glad you came here the people on here will give you the best advice. Most of us will tell you since she’s acting normal it may be just a wait and see game now.?
Whatever ya do DONT listen to Facebook!!!

Than

Thank you for responding, I did tell Lilly about the forum and I would love for her to talk to the experts.. I honestly wish someone could talk to her without it being online.. I know she would be willing to talk to anyone who can help..
She will love the forum I promise. I'm elderly without much experience online so I always kinda felt unsure anywhere else. The TFO is online but so closely watched over and so full of information I'm glad I found them.?

I thought your vitamin was interesting because I love flukers too. I found a bottle of drops by them with d3 and calcium and some other vitamins that I would take myself. It smells so delicious. I have a hard time getting my little guy to eat the powders but he doesn't hesitate with the liquid drops.

I will tell you Myself and two other people went in together and got a few things. A CHE and the lamp was ordered today and it's being shipped directly to Lilly's home for Loka..

Th
does she have a light fixture where she could screw in a “CHE” light bulb?

Omg i my 6 month old Sulcata LOVES her calcium. She'll eat a whole pile of it all by itself lol. However she wouldn't even touch her food with it sprinkled on it at all. She'd trample through it all as in telling me this isn't what i want and I'm going to destroy it. Also my little one wouldn't touch the cuttle bone so i got the vanilla flavored cuttle bone. I broke a few pieces into bite size. Put it in the enclosure and Scooter Baby ate it. So i did a few more pieces and again she ate it. So i then did it again but added in a few bite size pieces of the real cuttlebone with no flavor. Scooter Baby ate it all. So i tried just the real cuttlebone and she ate it and hasn't stopped since. Now ever since loving the cuttle bone she loves the powder too. There is flavored powder calcium also. I think it was Ebay where i saw it but Amazon should have it. I think its strawberry/banana flavor.
