I have a 2 year old Leopard tortoise that I purchased. She makes a hissing sound if I startle her. I thought she was hissing in her bath and realized that she was breathing, I made an appointment with a exotic veterinarian and xrays show that she has “a little pneumonia”. She is taking Baytril 22.7 mg. 1/2 tablet once daily.
2 weeks ago I changed her enclosure from a 70 gallon aquarium to a bed frame with a portable green house on top of it. The vet recommended that I add a small fan for ventilation as I did. She eats and drinks just fine. Is there something special I should be doing? I soak her 3 times a week and watch her diet very close. Any suggestions? Heat is 92f, 90f and 84f. Humidity is 60%. image.jpgimage.jpg

Tortoises make a hissing sound when they withdraw their head into their shells rapidly. That's perfectly normal. What makes you think your tort had a respiratory infection? Did it stop eating? Did the vet take an x-ray? I'm pretty sure baytril doesn't work orally for tortoises, it has to be injected.

If your heat is good and the tortoise is eating and behaving normally, I wouldn't have gone to a vet. Antibiotics should be a last resort and often do more harm than good.

How are you measuring temps? Where are you measuring those temps? Have you put a digital thermometer over in a corner away from the heat sources?

I have 3 digital thermometers and another on top of her hut which measures heat and humidity. I check them about 3 times a day. I still soak her 3 times per week. Yes, she is eating and acting the same as before. Any suggestions?

She was in her bath and I always stay with her and she was making a noise when she would breathe, that resembled the hiss when she goes into her shell. I have read so much on the upper respiratory thing, that maybe I did panic. But I would rather be safe than sorry. Yes the vet took X-rays and found two little stone pebbles with the Pneumonia. She eats, drinks and poops like normal. What are you recommending? Should I NOT give her the antibiotic??? I have copies of her x-rays.

what is the prognosis for an untreated symptomatic tortoises with a mycoplasma infection ?

do you believe mycoplasma positive symptomatic tortoises are symptomatic due to co-infections ?
