Maybe that's why she is acting "onry".
But she was a he before and he has acted that same way ever since I have had her. Some guy from Corvallis was in Portland and found Knobby very badly pyramided and just walking the street downtown. So the guy picked Knobby up and brought him to Chintimini Wildlife Rescue who called me and I have been putting up with him for going on 3 years. Then my sister saw a picture I posted of Knobby's face and says "that's an awfully feminime (oh damn no spelck)" face take a picture of her butt. So everybody said Knobby is a female. I have never had a female tortoise so female was never in my mind. However, he may have female parts but she has a male personality so he is the tortoise who would be Queen; Mary Knobbins. And now I get to take down most of the cinderblock fences, and Mary will be in a safe boring large yard surounded by a 4 ft solid cedar fence there's nothing in there except for 6 rose bushes. I'm gonna take bets on how long I keep those roses

hey.... be careful what you put out there..
I AM on the EAST coast and I need help with my 100lb sulcata .. she can’t get in or out of house ,tub,shed..etc.... without me.
I would pay good money for help till I recover from surgery (2-4weeks)...
But I won’t ask anyone because I am still not sure you can have a “legal” sulcata where I am from...? We got her in Albany many years ago and then they went out of business.!!!! They were called “Wet Pets” Incase anyone was gonna ask...
And yes just like Maggie says ...
They are like true bull dozers.
But that’s what I love about her.
She keeps me grounded... lol ?
Is there such a thing as an illegal Sulcata?

Oh my garsh... I'm in stitches and don't have any. Lovely little rocks aren't they. They just sit there with cute little faces smirking... until they feel like moving...?

yes. I don’t think you can have one in NJ??
I have looked it up and I think you need a permit or something to have one ??
(In case it escapes??)
I don’t have one so I just stay below the radar and stay as quiet as I can in the back yard.. ?

A permit is needed to own turtles/tortoises in NJ. It is not hard to get one. Just ask Chris Leone. He just posted something about that process the other day. Maybe he will come on here and give you the info.

You can own just about anything with a permit in NJ. They love the permit process !

Frankly, that's BS. Since I moved out of California, and started to keep more chelonia, I have kept illegal turtles and tortoises I just can't see the DFG knocking on my door saying, "we understand you keep an illegal Western Painted turtle". But of course, that comes from someone who generally speaking, will break different laws without thinking. Most people are law abiding.

Listening and watching, yes. I have asked a few questions and got great answers. I don't have much to offer, so it was best to read and learn as I went on.

You need to make friends with somebody that works for the state highway department and see if you could get a few dozen of these when they finish a project...

Yes and my husband. My tort started weighing too much for me so my husband is there when I need him. It was soak day. My tort turned 6 years in Sept. I was one of those that didn't know any better. I live in a small town, my son had just flown the coup, my husband and I were out for a ride and went to the pet store that belonged to someone I knew, only to buy my dogs a chew. We saw about 15-20 little bitty tortoises in a 10 gal fish aquarium. I picked one up and he crawled under my sleeve. My husband went over and paid for it. I thought they were soooo cute! Brought back memories of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and my son's childhood. I didn't go there for this. LOL We brought it home on the dash board of the truck, along with ALL the mistakes pet stores tell you to do. Rabbit pellets, hot lamp, 10 gal open aquarium. The first night I came in and saw his water bowl was empty. I thought: they sure drink a lot. The next night the same thing. I realized real quick it was the lamp that was evaporating everything. I stuck one of those raisin boxes in for shelter. I stayed up that night searching the web and found Tom and Yvonne and others. It took me a week of late nights til early mornings reading threads. My husband and I didn't know what the heck we were doing, but made him a really nice sealed indoor habitat, just like Tom would talk about. It had a top!!! I put a window in it so I could watch him. It seemed like he liked it too. When he was 3, we moved him outside into our shed, fixed it up again; keeping up on all the guidance that tortoiseforum.com gave. Just this summer we made one of Tom's Night boxes. Two winters in the shed became quite expensive: oil heater running, red mat on the bottom, heat panel above him, two heated humidifiers on timers. Me running water out every cold day! When the ants started making a nest under the patio bricks, I went to you all and read threads again. Diaconacous (sp) earth. I planted only stuff he could eat in my yard. Yeah! It's lots and lots of work and very expensive. We invested in 2 pallets of cinder blocks. I just wished they didn't look so daggum cute when they are little, folks just don't know what they are getting into when they get big and powerful.

Amen to that last sentiment!

When I took Herbie I knew he will get big, strong, that he will dig and walk over things. Just watching him now, his will to go over things is making me plan his future enclosure.

What scares me is the amount of people getting them and not caring for them.
TikTok is full of people just ordering one for fun.

And here is me planing for the day when I kick the bucket and making sure Herbie will be taken care off.

I'm afraid so many will be abandoned and just let go to fend for themselves. I think that is already happening. It's very sad ?
