Congratulations! How great to hatch an Egyptian.

Just a note if you're receptive - we've found perlite is a very dangerous incubation medium. Babies normally test eat everything when they first hatch (and even before with just their head out) and perlite looks like their eggshell which they normally consume entirely before emerging from their nest. However, the perlite is a volcanic glass, and will stay in the intestines creating blockage and is deadly. I know lots of folks still use it and its fine... until they have one that does eat it, and they wonder why they lost the baby several weeks later.

Thank you ! I appreciate your advise. I have been breeding Egyptians for the past four years using organic Perlite as an incubation substrate and thankfully I have not had any issues. But if it were to happen one time would be too many and I certainly would not want to take that gamble. Egyptian eggs due require a dry substrate. I have used vermculite in the past and have had on occasion eggs that prematurely crack from vermculite absorbing moisture from a small container with water. What incubation substrate would you suggest specially for Egyptian eggs?

Thank you,
Martha

@dovelett15 how long does it take for the tortoise to hatch? Meaning from the first crack in the shell to the Hello World moment.

Congratulations!!! ❤️

In my experience it has taken 4-6 days from pipping to debut. Incubation has taken 98-138 days. Quite a variation in incubation of this specie.
