Hi,

My 2 yr old has been non stop walking around the house. I'm in north California and because of the air quality from the fires, don't think it's safe to take her outdoors. How can you tell the difference between distress walking and just regular nosy, exercise walking. Fyi..she sleeps indoors in an enclosed terrain but we let her out in the morning. She hates being enclosed. Slams on the doors and jumps off her rocks. She def lets us know what she wants. Major attitude

They should never be loose in the house. That is a recipe for disaster. What species? You need an indoor enclosure with all the correct temps, lighting and humidity for your species.

Thank you. We have the house baby proofed. She has her enclosure but loves being free. She is a hermann tortoise. She sleeps in her enclosure and spends the winter in there but summers is her free to roam time.

I realize we will never change your mind, but it is so bad for that tortoise. He's stressed out and that's what that walking means. We had a member who, like you, let his small Sulcata walk around all day. So this member tried to close a door in the house, and that little tortoise was squished between the door and the frame. The member was hysterical. The tortoise's head was smashed, it was horrible. Please figure that we have serious amounts of experience here and if you don't do anything else, please get that tortoise off the floor.

We are very careful. I doubt her walking is stressed but thank you for your feedback

She has been walking around both outside in our home freely for 2 years. I was just wondering how you can detect stress. She loves exploring and really seems happier when she is out of her enclosure though she does get her uv and heat in the morning and evening. We watch over her as we would a baby.

She’s walking around because she doesn’t know her surroundings. The constant change is not good for her. It’s dangerous and just too cold for torts.

Sorry, I probably shouldn't have posted this. We are in northcalifornia and our temperature is still full summer. She also knows the house since she's been walking around for 2 years. She has her specific "hiding" spots and we also set up climbing and sun bathing areas around the house.

No one here will recommend letting them roam your house, so you will not get that validation from us or advice on whether or not it is stressing the tortoise out. Good luck to you, hope you heed the warnings.

Sorry hun, she is not a baby. Its a tortoise. They need a consistent space. Letting them out and the putting them back in there small enclosure stresses them out, and their like “I swear there was something on the other side of this wall!” Then they ram and bash things... scratch every inch of the enclosure....
