Hey I'm new here and idk if this would be helpful or not but when I got my tortoise, the lady at the pet store looked and the shape of the plastron. If the plastron is flat its female, if its concave its male and even though when I got my tort he was pretty young she said hes most likely to be male.

this only works on some species of tortoise. For example, the Russian tortoise male has a flat plastron, not concave. So you have to look at other things to tell the gender. And the tail is the most prominent feature. Most pet store clerks haven't a clue about tortoises or tortoise-keeping.
