Hey all,

I'm seriously considering branching out of star tortoises and working with nabeulensis. Their small size, color pattern and opposite care to what I am used to really intrigue me.

I know C. Leone is the only one consistently breeding them in the US. Is there anyone on here with Nabeul hatchlings from Chris? I would love to see your setups and learn more about your animals growth, diet etc, thanks!

I've paid for a 1.2 incubated hatchling trio from Chris Leone for this season, but I have not received them yet. I would recommend reaching out to him about his set-up for this subspecies.

Good idea! I already have, I'm wondering if anyone on here has already purchased hatchlings in previous seasons and would be willing to share their information/experiences raising them. I'm curious how they have turned out, as he has been offering them since 2017/2018 I think, thanks.

Agreed! I’ll take anybody with firsthand knowledge of raising these guys at this point haha.

@Kapidolo Farms you know everybody who is anybody in the community. Is there anyone stateside besides Chris that has knowledge of keeping nabeulensis?

@PA2019 they drink from the pot but the problem they pee and poop in it turns the water into yellow
sometimes i soak them
since i had a problem with small tortoise eye he got infected because of water i just give them what they need a little water enough
now he is okay after some Antibiotics
if it's cold day i don't give them water

On face book the Tortoise Trust posted several habitat images of where Tunisian tortoises live. It is their October 31st post. https://www.facebook.com/Tortoise-Trust-82629783060/

Thank you for linking this. I've been looking at monthly temps and humidity levels where they are found and am seeing humidity levels in the 50-60% range throughout most of the year.

Since they are typically found more coastal, I wonder if they are similar to egyptians in that they appreciate an increased nightly/early morning humidity bump before temps rise and everything dries out.

Merci de votre aide! J'ai passé deux ans en France quand j'étais plus jeune. J'habitais une ville appelée La Seyne sur Mer près de Toulon. Mon père est né là-bas. La France me manque et je veux revenir bientôt.

1) The consensus on raising nabeuls seems to be low to almost no humidity or else they really struggle. What kind of humidity levels were recorded in their immediate habitat? Did humidity levels rise throughout the night and into the early morning before dissipating as daytime temperatures rose? I have read how their natural habitat is near the coastline which makes me wonder if they experience early morning sea-fog.

2) When was the breeding season in their habitat? Did it coincide with monsoon rains, cooler weather or some other instigator?

3) Did you observe male-to-male aggression/combat much? Some keepers in Europe have success keeping larger groups with multiple males while others are adamant that single males are essential.

4) Did you observe nesting females? Any idea on their size (plastron length) and weight? What kinds of substrate/locations did they seem to prefer nesting in?

5) Any idea on how deep the nests typically were?

5) Did you collect any data on the average size of clutches? 1,2,5 eggs?

6) Were you able to find any hatchlings? Any idea on size and weight?

7) Did they have any dietary preferences? Did they seem to eat more grasses, cacti, succulents, or darker, leafy plants?

I have more questions haha, but I don't want to overwhelm you, thanks again!

Ha super ! J'espère que tu pourras revenir nous voir très vite ! :)

For sure they need a very low level of humidity but you need to provide a humid area. Winters are quite humid on the Morning and on the evening but quite warn during the day. They can be active during the brumation if it is a Sunny day.

2) When was the breeding season in their habitat? Did it coincide with monsoon rains, cooler weather or some other instigator? !
From springtime to autumn during all the activity period.
I saw egg laying at the beginning of this period so as all tortoise/turtle they are able to conserv sperm during winter.

3) Did you observe male-to-male aggression/combat much? Some keepers in Europe have success keeping larger groups with multiple males while others are adamant that single males are essential.!
Not a lot of aggression due to big enclosures so I cannot say in captivity.

4) Did you observe nesting females? Any idea on their size (plastron length) and weight? What kinds of substrate/locations did they seem to prefer nesting in?!
Yep, I saw many time especially on my garden there. I had one for my wedding day!
They are living on a quite sandy soil. :)
No idea of the exact size honnestly, it depends of each one at the end.

5) Any idea on how deep the nests typically were?!
I saw nest of around 20cm depth.

5) Did you collect any data on the average size of clutches? 1,2,5 eggs?!
From 1 to 6 eggs but I know a big female can do more. :)

6) Were you able to find any hatchlings? Any idea on size and weight?!
Very tiny! I Don't register this kind of data sorry.

7) Did they have any dietary preferences? Did they seem to eat more grasses, cacti, succulents, or darker, leafy plants?!
They are eating all of this kind of things and some fruits. You need to provide then, as the others species, a varios diete.

I have more questions haha, but I don't want to overwhelm you, thanks again!
No problem, you're welcome.
I hope I was complete on my answer?

At the end you need to provide them a big enclosure with différents types of soil and with a good gradient of temperatures and humidity.
