Hi,
In September, I ordered a yeArling Sri Lankan Star Tortoise from Tortoise town.

Now I’ve had the tortoise for 7 months and weighs about 114 grams. Also about 4 1/2” inches.

Is there any way to determine the sex rn?

It is probably too early still to tell. But, is the plastron indenting at all? Maybe take a picture with the tortoise upside down and horizontal, with the camera even with the plane of the plastron, that way we can see if it is indenting at all.

I'm sure that was a typo - you meant 2-1/2" not 4-1/2". At 4-1/2" a star tortoise would weigh right about 325-345g and at that size it could just barely start to show signs of its sex. At 114g it is way to early to tell.

No it’s about 4 inches. The tortoise eats and poops everyday so idk why it would be underweight.... I’ll get a pic upside down.

Marks right, 4 inches and 114 grams is not good. What was it’s weight when you first got it from Tortoise Town? @kingsley How much do your yearling Sri Lankan’s weigh normally?

Looks to me that this animal can use some hydration. Most of my 3” animals are around 200-250 grams. I would think some daily soakings and humid conditions would help tremendously.

So, it’s been over a month and my guy has grown almost over an inch. The tortoise is 160 grams and I have been keeping him/her in a more humid environment. Am I doing everything right? Is it still too young to determine the gender?

That tortoise does seem underweight, mine have been twice as heavy at that size. But it does seem to be growing so? I would personally send a stool sample to my vet to rule out any type of parasites.

As far as the sex of this tortoise goes it’s still to early to tell, but my guess would be female.

He/she poops every other day in the water dish. I’ll still send a sample. However, he/she is very active and eats everyday so idk why it would be underweight....
