This is almost biblical in newsworthiness: I almost feel as if I've given birth myself! This is the result of an incredible amount of research, networking and 'turtle instinct' on Dan's part. I never had any doubt that it would happen...it was just a question of when. This baby is the first of many yet to come.
Wow! Thanks Jonathan.

Progress on goals and success, some of the best moments in life can be had in those two words. I'm glad to see this happen. I'll look forward to your 100th.
Thanks Will! I also look forward to the 100th!

Congratulations Dan,
It is the hard work and commitment of people like you that ensure the survival of a species in need of help. Your efforts will no doubt lead to future success to all those who work with these amazing Tortoises. You should be given an award for your hard work and reasearch!! Another great sucess story for keepers in the U.S.

Here's an updated picture of "Sol". My daughter and I decided we will use a Solar System theme to name all of the bowsprit babies. We will start with the Sun and head out through the planets. Hopefully I run out of planets soon!

Dan, I could not see in your other posts, but what is Sol's weight and size? I am interested to see how S/He compares to mine.

Hi Carol. She was 20g and 41mm when hatched.
Thank you Dan. So she is slightly heavier than Rue was but lighter than Kang, Clark and Harry were. When KCH were found they did not have any yolk sacks, so they possible were in the ground for longer. Rue on the other hand did have a slightly small egg sack still attached. It is very interesting.

So amazing, Carol do you know how long it takes for an egg sack to close? My little one came out of the ground with it nearly closed (took a day or two then it was completely closed) so I’m just trying to figure out a more precise ‘hatched’ date as a DOB..

Hi Christine. Dan would be better able to answer that, as I am still fairly new to the world of tortoises myself. And congratulations. Please start a thread under Bowsprit and post pictures. We would love to see your little one. In your thread if you could advise how you are keeping it, what kind of enclosure (post a pic of your enclosure), the lighting being used, your temps and humidity etc. It would be great. As we are trying to build the info on Angulata on TFO.

Hi Dan, many congrats!! He/she looks beautiful :) could you tell me how to measure the little ones? I also have a hatchling and want to track its size but I’m just not sure from where to where to measure [emoji16]
The standard when it comes to weight and length is grams and mm. Get a gram scale with an accuracy of at least +-1g. As for length, SCL (Straight Carapace Length) is what we use. This is a measurement from the front of the tortoise to the back of the tortoise. You can do this by setting the tortoise on a ruler and looking down, or you can use a pair of calipers and close the calipers on the front-center and the back center.

At least that's what I do !
