Hey all,

Is it smartest to buy directly from Mazuri? I saw a 25 pound bag is roughly $30. Harrison crushes food, but obviously he won’t need the whole bag. If this 25 pound bag is the best option, I’d be more than happy to send some to you all. Also, how long can you store Mazuri for without going bad?

Thanks!

Mazuri direct is a good option. I order some items that my local feed store cannot get. But as for regular Mazuri 5M21 - my feed store is less expensive than Mazuri - plus there is no shipping that way. Check your local feed stores. That is probably your best bet.

I get the 25# bag from Mazuri and then parse it out into large tupperware type containers that i store in our old/second fridge. You could seal in ziploc freezer type bags as well. Lasts a long time....

A lot of people sell one pound bags on the Internet.
AZ Tortoise Compound is the one on the top of my mind .

Most feed stores that sell Purina can get Mazuri. I was surprised when I ordered some at a local store at not only how cheap it was, but that they already ordered it for our local zoo.

Mazuri in the paper bags has a fairly short shelf life- there are oils in it that will go rancid once exposed to air. As soon as you can, repack it in plastic bags and freeze it, or buy it in the smaller multi-layer bags from the pet store. As long as the multi-layer bag is sealed, the stuff will last a long time.

I would be interested in buying mazuri. I live in Jordan. If I were to buy some, how would I pay?

Appreciate an answer.

Thanks.

@DanB The original formula Mazuri is what most seem to prefer. It softens much easier when soaked. Feed stores are the best source as Mazuri brand is owned by Purina Mills. You can also order direct from the Mazuri website. I find that a bit more expensive than feed stores, plus with the feed store there is not shipping charges.

Look for the red tag on the bag. The product is formula 5M21. I find it from Mazuri only in 25 lb bags for $31.
The newer LS Diet is formula 5E5L. That is available in 25 lb bags - $44 and 12 oz bag. - $10. Many tortoises don't seem to like as much and it is much more resistant to softening.
There is also now a small pellet formula for "small tortoises". Comes in 6 oz bag for $9. It is an "LS" formula. Formula 5M3A. I haven't tried this one nor heard any feedback on this one.

@Gillian M The Mazuri brand is sold in the US and is against trademark laws to sell in Europe/ overseas. They licensed a brand called Nutrazu for overseas. Exact same product from the same company, just different branding. The original formula Mazuri is formula Nutrazu 50J3. Perhaps that can help a search over there.

My local feed store can order mazuri for me ... my concern is that by the time the wee baby Darwin eats 25 pounds of it, much of the nutritive quality will be lost.

Do you have tips or thoughts on how to repackage and preserve mazuri, once opened?

Alternately, i could just keep buying it a couple of pounds at a time from eBay.

Thanks,

Jamie

Package up in ziplock bags and/or 1-2 gallon type food containers. One 25 lb bag packaged up like this lasts well, stays dry, etc. keep out of heat, light, etc.

A 25lb bag of 5m21 yields 10 one gallon zip lock bags. These fit nicely on the inside of my freezer door. I freeze this just because of ants here in Florida. It does have some kind of oils in it that you can feel on your hands after touching. Fed once a week to my 5 RFs, a 25 pounder lasts 3 to 4 months.

I've kept Mazuri in a "hopper" for months as it was being used in my air conditioned house that is 73 degrees 24/7.
I didn't experience it going bad or smelling off. The tortoises kept eating it.
However, twice now there have sprung from it a plague of tiny moths. I mean hundreds of them.
My wife now forbids me to keep it any other way than in the freezer. Because I'm strongly assuming that if kept in my garage or one of my sheds the heat would affect it.

If sealed up, I read somewhere that it is good for a year from the date of manufacturing.
