To anyone planning to buy-

Keep in mind that these tortoises will need to be kept in separate enclosures. Tortoises should not be kept in pairs, and when they get to a new place, they will almost certainly fight for the territory. It is very stressful for them to stay together.

He
I am trying to rehome my adult male and female Sulcatas. They are over 15 years old and the male is at least 80 pounds, female about 60 pounds. They are big and beautiful. I am going through a divorce and unfortunately I have to move. I'm heartbroken. I want to find them a good home with lots of grass to graze and a safe place in the winter.
I’m sorry to keep texting you but are they still available I’m very interested please let me know either way thanks [email protected]

That's true here and now, however, when they get moved to a new territory, it may not still be the case. We've seen it happen over and again, tortoises that used to get along 'at home' fight for the territory when moved. It's just something for the new owner to keep in mind - if you don't have room to separate them if needed, don't get two.

Please stop posting untrue things on my thread and trying to make it hard for me to find them a good home. I have moved my tortoises to a new home before and they did not fight. I have owned Sulcatas for over 20 years, I think I know a thing or two about them.

When they move to a new territory, they will fight for it. It happens almost every single time. In addition, most tortoise bullying is mental and not physical, for example, “snuggling”, “following”, sleeping in the same hide/burrow, and sitting nose to nose are not signs of affection, but one tortoise trying to push the other out of its territory. I promise you, your tortoises are not friends, and they don’t have the ability to be.

A good home is one that is willing to separate them. We’re helping you find that.

I don't think you'll have much luck finding a suitable party willing to adopt/pay for 2 adult Sulcatas. Transportation and or shipping fees for a single adult Sulcata would deter most interested buyers let alone 2.

Have you tried contacting the nearest tortoise rescue (with the appropriate accommodations to house adult Sulcatas) around your area to see if they're willing to take your tortoises in?

Can you send me pics of the area you have for them? Do you know how to care for them? They mate and my female lays viable eggs. Would you be able to find homes for the babies?
Yes I know how to take care of them, as I said I have a sulcata he’s about 80 lbs in a different place in my yard that he lives in. (I adopted him about 6 yrs ago I don’t plan on putting them together) I just put in a pond in this area so it’s all dirt but I have seeded it so they will have grass. As far as babies go I have only had one so I haven’t thought about that honestly. However I know that I would make sure that the person knows how to care for them and has a safe enclosure for them. To me that’s a must. This is a pic of Travis in his yard. If you email me I can send you pics I’m having problems uploading them to this sight thanks [email protected]

I have actually had a lot of offers to take both but I am being choosy were I place them. Thanks though.

And I promise you I know my tortoises. Like I said, I have had them for 15 years and have had tortoises for over 20 years. If they have a large enough place to roam then they do not have to fight for territory! How do you think they live so long in the wild? They don't have separate enclosures in the wild!

No, but they stay out of each other's territory in the wild. When one ventures into another's territory the owner of the territory fights him to the death.

They don’t have enclosures at all in the wild, so they can actually escape and never see each other again. And as Yvonne stated, on the rare occasion that they DO see another tortoise, they will fight, mate, or both.

Again, my tortoises do not fight and they have never fought. Like I said, if they have a big enough area, no reason to fight. Byeeeee!

You are doing your tortoises no favor by keeping them together, and they are not friends. What’s the harm in making sure they go to separate homes?
