~ Extremely busy day today, picked up 16 sulcatas today from three different locations. They ranged from large males to hatchlings. The 8 adults and 4 yearlings have been relocated and four hatchlings we are going to hold back for a while, they look to be about two weeks old. One male was exceptional, the one in the cart. I think this is a record for us!

Wow, that may be a world record. Why were there so many? Just people giving them up cuz they got too big? They all look pretty good. Good luck rehoming them.

~ Three different locations, three different reasons. Seems like there are more and more lately. The four hatchlings were from a very unfortunate set of circumstances, however the others were simply unwanted for various usual reasons, two of the larger males were constantly fighting and another for digging. I suspect we may need additional sources if we continue to get large mature males. We actually had three females today, highly unusual.

@ALDABRAMAN ...Greg... I am SOOOO impressed with your dedication to these animals...to maintain a herd the size of yours...then to take in the numbers of rescues you do requires the compassion and heart of a giant! You are to be commended my friend! :tort: :tort: :tort: :tort:

Wow. That’s a lot of tortoise in one day. Glad you are able to accommodate taking all these guys in/rehoming them. I do not see a way to pm you @ALDABRAMAN, but if you ever need somewhere to rehome some adults I might have someone. Pm me and I will give you more information.

~ We have several sources that have taken most rescues and drop offs, however because of all the larger males we seem to get, some of regular sources can't handle any further males. The males from yesterday were taken to two sources. We are always looking for possible future rehoming sources. We prefer local sources. Many of times, like yesterday, we need to take them directly to the new homes. We simply do have the pens available to temperately keep them. We get many e-mails from people wanting tortoises, however they are usually generic, many of times no names or phone numbers. When i respond and ask for pictures of the locations, 9 out of 10 times they never make the effort to send any. If anyone is within reasonable distance we are always receptive to new possible recipients for rescues. We have plenty of sources for the females, however it is rare to get any females. Anyone in Florida receptive to taking rescues, please feel free to e-mail us at [email protected].

~ The four hatchlings seem weak, hopefully they will get stronger. We are monitoring them closely today, hopefully the sunshine, soaks, etc. will help. I will post pictures later.

Local makes sense. The man I was talking about lives in Tennessee, which is closer than all the sulcatas that need homes in California- but it is still a ways away. Well- if you ever get desperate I can put the two of you in contact with each other. He has plenty of space and expierence.

~ These little ones we will hold back for awhile, one is very low weight and seems kinda lethargic.

I hope the little guys make it.

~ The one of concern seems a little more lively today. Several warm soaks, plenty of sunshine and it is very humid these days here. Two are now pooping, however no signs of eating just yet.

~ These four had a rough start. I am unsure of where they were actually hatched or even if they are all from the same source. These came from a location involving a death of the owner with no known family or relatives. When i picked them up they were in a shoe box with paper towels. My guess they were just recently purchased and never made it to a habitat. How long they were in the shoe box is unknown, however they are very young, my guess is a week or so at best.

Oh that’s just tragic [emoji20]
I’m so glad they are doing better.

~ It has been two days since we picked them up, three are doing fine, the one still acts funny. I am struggling with its behavior, i am almost convinced it may have a neurological issue. Seems to be slightly better after two days of TLC, seems to really relish the soaking and sunshine.

~ Day four, three of the hatchlings are doing fantastic. The one is still of concern, refuses to eat and rarely sleeps. This is puzzling, i think they were purchased and left in the shoe box for two days with nothing. It was not excessively cold where they were, however really can relate to folks that get these very young hatchlings and have difficulties at times. My opinion, they are too young to be sold, they have no growth and seemed to be right out of the incubator, maybe a few days old at best. We usually hold our hatchlings for 30 days and make sure they are started well and have no possible issues. Three are eating and spend time in the sun. The one of issue seems to hide in the shade and we don't think is eating at all.
