Curtis is currently in a 5x2.5 foot closed chamber, and it’s going to be time for an update soon(which is a shame because it took us 6 months to build it). I’ve been told that this would be big enough for a pancake(but I won’t be getting any any time soon). So here are my questions-
If I stacked flat rocks to give more room+hides, could I keep a group of 3?
Do pancakes do better alone or in groups?
Would it be too risky to get a group of hatchlings, because there could be one or more males?
Will males fight in a group?
If there was one male, would it be almost guaranteed for it to mate with the females?
We all know the motto: once you have one tortoise, you can’t stop!

Pancakes are awesome and we have a few breeders here on the forum!!!

  • They generally get along well in groups. In large enclosures, you can keep multiple males sometimes.
  • 5x2.5 is really borderline for housing adults. Bigger would be better, but given the nature of this particular species, I think it would be okay.
  • They are fine alone, but they also usually get along in groups. There are occasional exceptions, but they don't tend to fight or be as territorial as some other notable species.
  • I think raising them from CB hatchlings is the BEST way to go.
  • The smaller the enclosure, the more likely male fighting, but there is only one way to find out… They might all get along.
  • No guarantees with tortoise breeder. Not ever. Not any time. Not any species.

Thanks, Tom! And yeah, they’re so interesting! They’re kinda the opposite of most other species, lol. They do well together, and they can stay in relatively small enclosures compared to other species! They’re just so cute!

That is makin' my mouth dry just thinking about it…

I gotta have syrup and butter. I don't go for all the fruit, or chocolate chips, or whipped cream or any of that mumbo jumbo.

I don’t like all the fruit or other junk either lol ... sweets aren’t my favorite.. so a plain pancake is like a cake to me, but not real sweet ! Yes I am wearing my weirdo hat!!! LOL
