My tortoise fence was fine when they were younger (read lighter), but now that they are close to 300lbs the fence is not strong enough to hold them. @Will and I have already repaired several sections and strengthened them, but this is what I found when I went out tonight to make sure everyone is put up:

broken fence a.jpg broken fence b.jpg

The boards are shredded. I was able to put up a sheet of plywood and pound in a few long cement stakes, but I have no more T posts, so it's not a real good fix. Tomorrow I'll go to Home Depot and buy some heavy T posts and fix it stronger. His problem is, once he's gone through a section, he keeps at it after it's been fixed because he knows he can. So it has to be fixed real strong.

We have them up for sale, but no one is breaking down our door to spend that kind of money on tortoises.

Yeah, its hard to justify that much cash .Even though its a very good price . You will never find a better deal if you're in the market for aldabra tortoises .

Yvonne and I have reached out to a few folks to sell these two guys. One is okay, with pyramiding, one is a bit sluggish in how he walks. Poor leg bone development?

Two for one is the pricing strategy for the most part.

Give me a PM. Text 215-483-7675 or call with a real voice conversation.

Wow, Greg! That's great. Are you doing this at your new property or the existing property? I hesitate to do anything permanent because the city is widening the street and I'm going to lose about 10' of the Aldabran yard. Until I know exactly where my new property line is going to be, I don't want to put too much money into fence. Here's what I did as a quick patch up:

~ I get that, your boys are getting to that very strong size, i have seen this size simply push down residential chain link fencing.

I have chain link now. My eventual plan is to line it inside with 2x10 boards stacked. But a concrete wall might make more sense.

Time goes by so fast. Mine won't be a young'un for ever
Would be amazing to have big bruisers like yours. but a handful

I am sorry that you have to sell your tortoises. If I lived in the right claimant I would love to have tortoises like that. The problem is I don't like heat and humidity :)
I can understand not doing anything until you get the final results for your property line. Maybe people could come down and do a big work day and completely rearrange their area. Make it look different and put them in a different spot so maybe they won't try pushing at the same spot in the fence.
I hope you can either figure out something that will work or find them a very good home.

I should have updated this thread a month or so ago. Both have been sold, thank goodness, but I have to admit, I really, really miss them. I'm having a hard time adjusting the amount of food I prepare each morning for all the tortoises, and find I usually have too much. Dudley, the sulcata, who I hardly ever gave additional food to (he has a big pasture to graze) is the beneficiary of the extra food. I've been dumping it in his yard and now each morning I find him waiting at that spot for a hand out.

Can you share any information about their new home? :)

They went to a reputable guy in SoCal who resold them. He told me the new owner is very happy to have them and they now live in a good climate and a safe area.
Good to hear. Sorry you miss them so much; I can understand. We all have a soft spot here for the shelled creatures!!! <3 I miss my little guy who is just hibernating right now. Your fence photo did make me laugh a bit though.

Hello all, newly registered here but long-time member of faunaclassifieds.

I was surprised to see these pictures of these 2 tortoises here as these were the same pictures I was given when I inquired from the reseller. I was close to the purchase but hesitated as I wanted to get in touch with the owners to get more information. The reseller didn't want to give the contact info (and for good reason) and by the time I got back to him (after a couple of weeks) the 2 were sold. Wasn't meant to be for these beautiful aldabras.

Definitely would have been a different story if I signed-up much earlier on this forum :)

Anyways, thank you for accepting my membership request. Will be reading things here frequently.
