Thanks Tom. I already got some contacts and I’m also in a process of applying CBW permit. I hope I will hear some good news soon. Thanks again.

They haven't been given out or renewing private CBW permits for at least three years now, and no sign of that changing.

If whatever you've got going doesn't work out, I know of two sellers in SoCal here. Contact me here on the forum anytime. :)

Good luck!

Hey Tom,

Just so you are aware, I know three or four people who have been granted their CBW Permits for A. radiata in the past 12-15 months or so. In fact. you just visited one of them in NY last week. Not as many CBW permits are being granted today as in the past, but they are still being issued sporadically. 8James8 received his last December 31 as I recall, another fellow from FL got his in July, and there is a fellow in TX who may have one granted any day now.

Thank you for the correction Mr. Z. At the last two TTPG conferences, the general consensus has been that no one was getting them anymore. I'm glad to hear that is not the case.

Although few are being granted, two of the people I mentioned as receiving permits recently have very little experience with tortoises, yet received permits. It seems it is just a hit and miss thing today. I would still encourage anyone seriously interested in having a permit to go ahead and apply. The only thing one has to lose is some time and $200.

As @zovick pointed out, I received my permit approval last December. I had no radiata hands on experience. I detailed my experience with stars and and several species of turtles. The rest was showing capability to keep and support the species. They do award them but not as easily in the past it seems. If you have any questions I'd be glad to walk you through my application's key points.

Hello, I recently bought a radiated tortoise from the turtle conservancy in Ojai,CA. If you are a California Resident no need for a CBW permit. https://www.turtleconservancy.org/recipientprofile.

Yes, you are correct. CA residents can buy Radiated Tortoises from Turtle Conservancy. The CBW permits are required for sales across state lines, but not are required when both buyer and seller are legal residents of the same state.

How much did you have to "donate" to the Turtle Conservancy for the tortoise?

I am wondering that too because on their website it says you can "adopt" burmese star tortoises, burmese black mountain tortoise, and radiated tortoises, which are all expensive to begin with.

I applied for my CBW back in April. It went up for public review in August and was finished that step on Sept 11th. In mid November I received a letter in the mail telling me I was denied. Their reasoning was that I hadn't demonstrated expertise since I hadn't successfully bred anything in the last ten years and didn't provide hatchling mortality rates from tortoises and turtles that I bred earlier in my life prior to 2005. I focused more on snakes between 2005-2012 but still kept a few tortoises. After answering numerous questions via email prior to public review and more than a few phone conversations, that reasoning seems like a bit of a reach.

They also said that since I hadn't bred any of the requested species nor participated in a species survival plan for the requested species, that I had not demonstrated my intent for enhancement of propagation or survival of the species. I can't demonstrate that if I can't get pairs of them in the first place, a very catch-22 reasoning.

While a bit bummed, I am not too worried about it. I'll be heading back to the lower 48 in August and will most likely end up in FL, TX, or AZ soooo a CBW will no longer be an issue and I can get my big guy a little lady or three.

That is a very discouraging experience. I think it really depends on how tight FSW wants to issue the CBW permit. I heard that they can give you any reason to deny your application or they can issue the permit to someone with very little tortoise experience. I just hope that I will have better luck. If they deny my application, I will have other ways of getting radiated tortoises since I am a resident of California. I just hope H.R. 2603 passes so we don’t need a CBW to buy and sell radiated tortoises anymore.

I am not familiar with this act... what is it? Also, I don’t know if it’s just me, but I have noticed that the most radiata’s for sale are in Florida and California. Florida is definitely the cheapest but California isn’t too expensive compared to other places.

The fellow from TX whom I mentioned in post #7 was granted his CBW Permit just before Christmas. He sent in his application in April.
