Hello, everyone, I have been learning about Sulcata care even if I had owned one 10 yrs ago. Just a few months ago I was able to aquire a Sulcuta yearling from someone. And it's name is ooguay. Right now it is about 5 in long. The reason I say it is because I am not sure of the sex yet. I have been browsing the forums here . And what I can say is , I have learned so much valuable information here . I like the fact that members here are always lending a hand when it comes to invaluable information on the many species of turtles and tortoises etc.Again thank you all.

Welcome neighbor from another sulcata owner! I'm afraid you won't be able to learn the sex for a few more years. Usually you'll learn you have a boy when you think his guts have fallen out!

I bought a used dog house on craigslist and I hung a ceramic bulb from petsmart. and for the door, I hung a blanket so he can go in and out as he pleases. I also lined the floor with tons of timothy hay for substrate but you can also use an old sleeping bag for him to lay on. just make sure the heatlamp is not too close to the blankets or substrate you are using. if all else fails , I just let mine in the house and stay in one of our closets, I have mine pretty much housebroken so that helps..
When tortoises get big, the ceramic heat emitters aren't the best for heating your tortoise. They concentrate the heat in too small of a spot. The tortoise can get overheated or burned in the center and still be cold at his extremities. What works better is a combination of a Kane heat mat on the floor and a radiant heat panel in the ceiling. Or you can get a small oil filled radiator if you have room.

Hi from Bakersfield. My question is what do I keep my sulcata in during our weather now . He's been outside all summer in his hole now I'm afraid he'll get to cold. He is not liking the dog crate. He flopped him self over again
Hi Karen,

Why don't you make your own thread in the sulcata section of the forum?

Thanks for the info, where can I get a Kane mat?
