Looking To Adopt Sulcata In Texas

Hello!

I have joined this forum in hopes to find myself a sulcata.

I've been on the hunt for awhile now for an adult sulcata but haven't had much luck. I've searched all the reptile rescues around me and even Craigslist, 5mile, and so fourth but nothing!

Apparently people only want to SELL theirs at this time. I'm simply looking to adopt.

He or she would have a big tortoise proof back yard to themself. And to say they would be spoiled might be an understatement.

I only feed organic small farm/locally grown or personally grown fruits and veggies. With a high quality pellet. We have tortious safe plants for them to much on including hibiscus! And no toxic plants are in the yard at all.

He or she would have a reptile experienced vet in case of any issues arising.
(Happy to provide a reference)

So I am looking for an adult tort who can safely roam the back yard here in Texas (brought inside during the winter and bad weather) and who would enjoy being spoiled rotten.

If you have one in the Texas area that is looking for a good home.
Please let me know!

Thanks!

Hi there!

I run a chelonian rescue in Spring Branch, Texas and we take in sulcatas all the time. If you'd like to check out our adoption requirements & want to get the adoption process started please visit our website: edenanimalsanctuary.com

Blessings!
Rachel
Hi! I have been on your site a number of times actually. The issue is you're 5 hours away from me. So gas plus an adoption fee would be very high.

If you had any adult sulcatas I would love to adopt one but driving 5 hours one way plus a typically $75-$300 adoption fee isn't feesable.

If you know anyone in my area who's giving one up let me know

Welcome to the forum! I would highly encourage you to have your housing completely ready for a sulcata if you don't already, also hang around awhile on here, we'd love to get to know you. I'm currently in Alaska but getting ready to move to Paris, Texas with my sulcata! Let me know if you need any help with anything on the ground, plus the folks here know what they're talking about!

He will have a whole backyard to himself/herself and a area to retreat and warm up should he/she need to escape the cold weather or the heat.

I've been searching for nearly a year. Without much luck. It's a long process but I'm hoping someone on here will see my post.

As for sticking around I'm more than happy to, I am active on another forum for my box turtle. But since I don't have a tortoise yet I'll probably just creep through posts :)

Post pictures of your setup for one . Some people care where their tortoise goes . It would be easier to adopt one with a enclosure in place . We run across some from time to time . But I will not send one with someone who isn't ready . Most people are the same way .

That's great, are you hoping to get a younger tortoise or a larger one to start off??

I'm going to try & be as diplomatic as I can here.
I do hope things work out for you & the right Sulcata finds its way to you.

In an early post you touted the great care a sully would get from you , including a reptile vet available. And then when mentioning the cost of a rescue said the gas & a 75-$300 adoption fee would be too much.

That's a bit confusing. In truth , it makes it look like even a vet visit would be beyond your finances.

Often the initial cost of a tortoise is the least of your expenses. While the right set up can allow for free roaming feeding , cold nights may require a heated shed. That's not cheap to set up. Vets are expensive. Fences have to be repaired.

I've rehomed a number of torts over the years - but never just gave one away. Why ? 'Cause my thought is , if ya can't afford a re homing fee , shipping , etc., you can't afford to care for one.

Good fortune to you.
Sulcatas really can be allot of entertainment & fun.

Very good point AM! That's why rehoming fees are so important. 'Free to good home" ads have always made me cringe!

Larger for sure, raising a baby is a whole not set of rules. I'd rather rescue an adult that someone needs to rehome. I can go get a baby any day of the week from anywhere.

Alaska Mike makes a good point! I like your post and you seem to have the right set up though!

Sorry, tone is really lost over text and I apologize for the confusion.

Money isn't the issue. It's not that I cannot afford it. It's just me attempting to be logical about weather or not to drive 5 hours each way.

I do understand your concern, I really do.
I do apologize for the confusion.

It was poorly worded on my party

I found one locally here for $400 so I'm going to contact them and see if he is still available.

I hope it works out well for you. I have a rescue now that free ranges & " owns " my backyard. He's about 50 lbs. had him almost 2 yrs now. Dug a tunnel under my shed. Quite a personality.

"Sal" was hit by a car after an escape from original owners at about 2 y.o so has some damaged shutes in middle of caprice. That would have been about 6 years ago. Seems fine now.

One day I'll need to re home him when my Aldabra needs more yard. Being in Florida , they do well here.

Good luck with your new tort. They are one of my favorites. U

I would love an Aldabra but I don't know about the care requirements of them. Just that they need a good amount of space.

Just be patient! When you least expect a sulcata for adoption will show up locally.

As you creep through the posts check out the numerous ones about keeping dogs away from your tort and the consequences of letting them have unsupervised time together.
