Yeah definitely. I did hear about a lotion/oil that you can buy for their shell and adds nutrients into it to strengthen it? Perhaps that may loosen up the tip ex

I don't think it would help, tip ex is some nasty stuff. And even if those lotions probably won't harm the shell, it's no benefit either, just a waste of money.
In nature a tortoise's shell comes in contact with air, water and soil, no wax/oily stuff whatsoever. I'm sure that's best for them.

That's a very true point I hadn't thought of it like that. Natural is best I suppose :) just doesn't feel like he's mine when he's still got the tip ex markings on :(

Just be patient, at the time it's vanished completely, I'm sure both of you will be so accustomed to each other, that you are truly family. :)

I'm trying. I've only had him a few weeks and I already love him to bits. He's like my baby! About to start changing his substrate now to coco coir, how do I use it? I'm armed with two buckets and a dust pan and brush with no clue of what I'm doing haha :)

Just a quick update!!!
I've just changed his substrate from that horrible wood chippings to coco coir and I am amazed at the difference!!! Instantly he was so much happier and hasn't stopped walking round his viv exploring which he didn't do before! Sounds sad but brought tears to my eyes at how happy he finally was! :)
Want to thank everyone on here for your advice, your all amazing and have gave me my happy little tort! :)

I got mine from petsathome it was £3 per brick or two for £5. My tort loves it, it's so much better for him

we also made up some sphagnum moss and mixed through coir as well, we have been holding humidy 60% and up no problem. we just add some water and mix up the whole lot every few days and mist as needed which is not too often. added some dry moss to the hides as well, fido loves to burrow in it at night.

the soil is quite messy and seems to dry out on the surface very quickly
It can't hurt to give it a try, but coco coir is very crumbly. I only tried it once, because it was messier and dried sooner than soil.

Because of what happened to me at Christmas i decided to google the risks of allergic reactions to coco coir and found out that there is indeed evidence of it causing respiratory aggravation so ive decided against it. Belle will have to continue making mud pies in her enclosure lol
