We purchased a greek tortoise from petsmart 2 1/2 weeks ago and she died today. My son is heartbroken and we want to get another one. I am looking for suggestions on dependable and reputable places to look. Thanks for your help!
Thank you everyone. Keepergale, no offense taken. She was very lively and active when she first came home.
Habitat was purchased from petsmart as well, an all in one deal 40 gallon, basking and uv lights. Purchased soaking dish.
Fed her fresh veggies with fiber tablet to supplement . Last Thursday she quit eating. Started soaking her, got her to vet who gave her antibiotic, vitamin B and A shots and fluids. Continued with antibiotics and soaks.
Got home this afternoon and she was gone. PLEASE guide me on anything I did wrong!! I DO NOT want this to happen again and am in no hurry to rush into another one without knowing what, if anything, I can do better, which is why I joined the forum. I found a lot of helpful info on here when she got sick.
Unless the pet shop bought the tortoise from a breeder, you don't really know how old it is. I'm even guessing it was a russian and not a Greek. I've never seen Greek tortoises in Petsmart. A one year old tortoise would be smaller than 4" and illegal for them to sell. Quite often those pet store people think a tortoise is young because it is smallish. Russians are a small species. Also, I've seen the wrong I.D. on the signs on the tortoise cages.
this is a young Greek tortoise:
And this is a young and a full grown russian tortoise:
In this picture there's a hatchling, then one about a year old, and the full grown is about 5" front to back.
