Check out this thread for some suggestions on substrate (and it will also help with your calcium question :) )

The common idea regarding substrate is you want something you can moisten. This keeps the humidity up which some feel helps prevent pyramiding. (Just one of the theories on pyramiding, check out http://tortoiseforum.org/thread-13106.html in the debate section if you want to know some more thoughts on pyramiding)

My favorite is Ecoearth. It's easy to spray down and keep the humidity up and is very soft for their shells.

yes i was thinking eco-earth, i already use this for a number of my trogs/toads so always have this in the house & realise that it keeps the humity high, thank you for the confirm i think i will be useing this.

would you use moss at all, people have been saying but moss in the torts hide so it can dig into it?

I keep all my inside tortoises and box turtles on cypress mulch bought from Tyler Stewart. He is a member here and the mulch from him is excellent. It holds moisture well hence creating the necessary humidity for tortoises like Sulcata and it also allows the animals to dig and bury themselves...

It's BLUEBEASTREPTILE.com

I THINK that Tyler (Blue Beast Reptile) is in the process of changing the name of his company. Here's a link to his web site under his new name of tortoisesupply.com/ :
