Hi everyone,

First of all Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place I'm new to the forum! I'm 29 from Southport, England.

We've had a tortoise in my family since 1972 and he has looked the same from the day we found him. We've no idea of age and as far as I know that's hard to tell?

I was curious what species he is. Can anyone tell from these pictures? Hopefully the pictures have worked :)

Many thanks!

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

He is one of the Greek tortoise species - Testudo Graeca. It's wonderful that you've had him so long. He looks great.

Thank you all for the replies!

That's great to know. A family member found him in the street all those years ago and after advertising that we'd found him no one claimed so my mum and dad decided to look after him.

That hedgehog was sleeping next to Toby when I went out to check on him :)

That's something you may have noticed in some Greeks, but Anamurum Greek tortoises have this shell color :)
Edit: wait I'm not sure, but I know it is a Greek :p maybe it's a Syrian...

There are 5 different species of Mediterranean tortoises these are the marginated tortoise, egyption tortoise, Russian tortoise (which is what I have), Herman tortoise and finally a testudinoidea.

Out of all of them I would say that yours looks most like the Greek tortoise as it has a very dark coloured shell where as the others usually tend to have lighter ones

Best of luck with your tort!:tort:
