Hello,

I'm a new member and my russian tort Maitai is in the 3 to 5 year age range. I just found out recently that he is indeed a male and measures 4.5 inches. He's eating well, very active and doesn't show any signs of eye or respriatory problems. I noticed a small, rough burned spot on his shell tonight after I brought him inside. We are visting family in NC and the weather is much warmer here than in Maine. Just curious if a tortoise shell can become sun burned!? The spot wasn't there before today.

Any help would be appreciated as I am still learning the art of tortoise keeping!

Thanks.

I don't see what you're worried about. The shell looks perfectly normal to me. The only burns I've seen on tortoise's shells are from a light that is placed too low over the tortoise, on indoor tortoises.

I can't see anything that looks like a burn.
Mind you my eyesight is rubbish.
Maybe there's a slight indentation there ?
