One of the boys is doing a school project on their favourite animal. He has chosen to do tortoises. He needs 10 interesting facts but I'm a bit useless on facts. He's only eight so they don't have to be really complicated I just wondered if anyone could help? Thanks you.

Turtles and tortoises can not come out of their shell.
A tortoise shell is made up of many different bones, and they're all connected to each other.
The scales on the shell are called scutes.
Tortoises can hold their breath for a very long time.
The biggest tortoise species grows to be over 600lbs at maturity.
Tortoises can pull their head and legs up inside the shell for protection from predators, and box turtles can close up their shell tightly.
Most tortoises are herbivores (eat vegetation), but some of the tortoises that come from rain forests also eat meat.

And then this from the 'net:

  • The oldest Giant tortoise ever recorded lived to the ripe old age of 152 years!
  • Giant tortoises can grow up to 5 feet in length
  • Giant tortoises can weigh over 600 lbs
  • In the 19th century, sailors used to eat the tortoises found on the Galapagos Islands because it was one of the only source of fresh meat they had on long voyages
Giant tortoises are truly magnificent and they are creatures of habit. A female will return to the same place every year to lay her eggs. Tortoises can also survive incredible lengths of time with very little food or water.
