New owner here. Do I change substrate once a week? Where can I get a good manual on Russian tortoises? Trying to to the best I can for my little guy.

Hello and a very warm welcome to the forum.
You don`t have to change the substrate of a tort enclosure once a week. Just clean the water and food dish every day and remove not eaten food and torts poop.
It is not necessary to change the substrate.
Orchid bark is a pretty good substrate and easy to keep clean and good for keeping humidity. I use it for all my torts: Sulcata, Redfoot and Testudo Hermanni.
I am sure it also can be used for Russian torts.
