RE: In the heat

No way to know for sure, but she looks to be around a year or two old.

That substrate is really not the best. Here is a care sheet for Russians for you:

Mistakes that are made now are going to last a lifetime for that tortoise.

You have a beautiful young Russian :) . But if you want it to STAY beautiful and healthy definitely follow the guidelines Tom linked in that care sheet. Beautiful young tortoises every year are irreversibly deformed from improper care.
Your substrate should be changed immediately. We just want both you and your tortoise to be happy. Best of luck to y'all

Eco Earth by Zoo med is a good substrate you can get it at any pet store. It naturally absorbs and breaks down odor and waste products. I use it and like it :)

I use sphagnum peat moss for the bottom layer to stay moist and humid and I place an inch of cypress mulch to top it off. But there are many other substrates that are great. That care sheet Tom linked should describe some

Yes!! A good substrate. This substrate is softer that the hard wood pieces and its not so hard to walk for your tort. You also can use normal earth without chemistry like me. Sometimes I mix the earth with sand for the southafrica species..ImageUploadedByTortForum1390065803.316293.jpgImageUploadedByTortForum1390065823.998748.jpg
