I know it is completely normal for Russian Tortoises to borrow, but after 12 years, mine just now started borrowing for the first time a bit over a week ago. He is in an indoor enclosure with coconut husk bedding. I'm curious if there would be any reason he would just now start doing this. He goes to the same spot every time and just sits in the hole he made half way under his water dish for a long time.

Sure it's hard to say. Just double check all temps to be sure they aren't too cold or too hot. If everything is the same/as it should be then I guess he just wanted too

Hello and welcome to TFO

What temperatures do you have warm side, cool side, directly under the basking lamp and overnight minimum?

Have you changed anything? When was the UVB last changed?

Pictures of the enclosure and lighting might help us to help you

A very warm welcome to the forum! :tort:

I too think that the issue is the temperature. Please check it and keep us updated.

Any pics of your tort and his/her enclosure? ;)

if your temperatures are good, then your tortoise decided one day that he wanted to burrow he doesn't know it's been 12 years so it doesn't really matter to him
