Wow...the advice is all over the place here. No treatment, continue treatment, pause treatment. I'm really at a loss here.

I was thinking I'd see some improvement after 5 days of treatment...but this morning his nose is still runny.

If i was a vet who specialised in tortoises then I'd tell you what to do but I'm not and neither is everyone else so people are just offering advice from experience, lots of tortoises are different and will undoubtedly suffer different symptoms of ailments that will last for different periods of time. Find a vet who knows about tortoises, there's not really alot else you can do, you're temps sound good and your keeping him hydrated so...

I went to a vet that supposedly knows tortoises (reference from this site) and the examination was a joke. Like most people, I only have so much money and want to get the most out of it. I was hoping someone on here could give me an idea of the quality of treatment I was receiving. So far there is little agreement.

Sorry about that. We usually get compliments on our help. In MY experience Baytril is given every other day for 10 days. Naxcel is given every day for 5 days. In my personal experience I would not expect a runny nose to stop in 5 days. BUT that said he should start to get better in 6 or 7 days. His nose is running clear, so I would think it's something else, not an URTI, so I would look at substrate, I personally don't like aspen. Make sure the substrate is moist, not wet not damp just moist. Making sure it's not dusty is what I am going for. Take or put him outside in the sun daily. And if you don't think he is getting better take him to another vet. Remember here...we are simply a group of keepers giving you our opinions based on our personal experiences. We aren't Vets altho we have some but they don't post regularly. Good luck, keep us posted

I appreciate the help. It just gets confusing when the advice conflicts. Did you see my post above about switching the substrate?

Leopold my yearling leopard tort developed a runny nose a few weeks back. His nose dried up after putting him outside in the dry California heat all day for a few days. (Shade and lots of water provided). Our humidity is low, and dry heat is what helps the best for runny noses.

Sorry guys, if I may ask, if the tortoises nose is wet, it could just be some form of allergy and if that wet nose has yellow mucus comming out of it, than it would be an infection and more to worry about?

Well, my little guy seems OK. Over the last week every time I checked his nose it has been dry...except once. I'm not sure why, but it was after he had been eating. It was clear like water.

He sleeps inside on dry aspen now and I have his nighttime temps kind of high--85 degrees. He chooses to sleep there as there is a cooler side of his pen at about 75 degrees. He has a humid hide, but so far has not used it.

During the day he is outside. Normally for about 9 hours a day. It's been in the mid-90's here everyday. He seems to like it hot most of the time. I spray down his outdoor pen a 3-4 times each day (it has no bottom and sits on the lawn). I also soak him twice a day and watch him drink.

He's a good eater. I give him greens in the morning before he hits the yard. Once he's out there he grazes. He sleeps most of the afternoon away waking up around 4:30/5:00 to graze some more. He goes inside after this and goes to sleep for the night.

So I guess he's doing well. Thanks for the help.

I sure wish I knew the answer to that too. But so far I haven't seen a definitive answer. I have seen a couple places, including the Fife Leopard Tortoise book, that a runny nose can be treated (at least tried at first) with dryness and higher heat. My guess is that anything thicker than water would indicate something more serious and require a vet visit. I haven't seen anywhere saying RNS is due to allergies.

I think both Maggie and I have already said that, yes, it might be something other than a respiratory infection...allergy or substrate too dry...could be any number of things. I never worry about clear bubbles or moisture. Only if it turns thick and colored or if the tortoise stops eating do I start to worry.
