Sand can cause impaction. Better to use plain dirt or coconut coir. Some will mix sand with another substrate but using a lot less sand then the other chosen cover

Doesn't matter if it's calci-sand, reptile sand or whatever fancy name they call it. Sand just plain isn't a good substrate for tortoises.

As an add in to coir or soil, sand is good. By itself, no.

Play sand is cheap and perfectly good. No need for high priced specialty sand from pet stores.

No, no, no. Sand is never recommended as a substrate. It impacts in the gut if eaten. It should not even be mixed with other types of substrate as it sticks to food and is easily ingested. Plese do not take the risk with your tort's health.

Sand is a natural part of soil, unless you have solid clay, so in a small amount mixed with other things it is okay for a healthy hydrated tortoise to be on. The reptile sand is not a good thing however.

I used to have both a substrate and sand in my Herman's enclosure for some odd reason I'd find him mixing the two together, and as soon as I'd fix it he'd do it again.... Maybe it was some game he was playing?? Anyways I personally didn't like it because for me it was harder to clean and I found my Hermann constantly eating it, I'm sure that isn't good for him....
Hope I helped!!

No, not really. You can mix sand in with other substrate, but alone is a bit of a no-no.
