My 5-year old tortoise is fine other then he is a really heavy breather like almost wheeze please let me know if my little buddy is okay like is that normal he is pretty big

How do you keep him? Have you posted your enclosure before and the temps, etc.
This is a high humidity tortoise. Even the adults like warm and humid surroundings.
He may or may not have the beginnings of an upper tract R.I.

I live in New Jersey I have a heat lamp and uv lamp and I use loose contact fiber substrate I have a pretty big encloser with a cup of water and a dish of food I also have a thermometer that I don't really know how to read I just adopted him yesterday

Should I have the heat lamp On all the time if he is cold ?

The thermometer you have are no good . You need a digital one at tortoise level . You can get one from Home Depot for Ten dollars or so .

Yes. just like that.
Also, I hear wheezing from time to time from one or another tortoise. It always goes away. At least it always has with mine.
It could be other things like physical exertion or mating noises, etc. It's not always serious.

Is he active and eating? Lack of humidity and stress are the first things I would look at in an otherwise healthy acting animal.

Congrats on the new addition. :)
