Hi THBfriend and Chris,

Thanks a lot. Now I don't have to spend hours surfing online wondering whether Herbie is a western or not. I'm definitely not happy with the pet shop. Is it common/ legal that you don't get a birth certificate / certificate in CA when you buy a tortoise?

Merry Christmas :)

Hi Chris,
Herbie is pretty good looking, isn't it :)
Yesterday I put him outside in the sun for the first time, and he loves it. Among all the plants, he picked a bush in the sun and got himself hidden under the branches. I guess it's some sort of self-protection, so it's difficult for predators to access him. He would turn himself 90 degree angle to follow how sun moves. It was adorable!

Here in the states, a certificate for the tortoise is not required.

Hi all

Is there any way someone could let me know of the subspecies of my hermann tortoise. I am fairly sure he is eastern but I do have doubts because he shows variation. Thanks Chris for all your helpful videos and diagrams that I have studied so closely but I just can't seem to be able to come to a 100% decision.

Thanks in advance

Eastern Hermann's tortoises, particularly young ones, can have a subocular yellow spot, as Chris mentions here.
Your tortoise shows none of the typical signs for Dalmatians, let alone Western Hermann's.
Eastern Hermann's tortoise hatchlings start out with more of a bronze and black carapace color, but they develop some nice yellows after a few years, like yours is showing in the photos. The yellow won't be quite as saturated as that of Western's, however.

Hey gang, been busy making the newest video on identifying Hermann's tortoise subspecies with up to date info. Took a while but it's done and up now on you tube and both of my sites. Direct link for it is:

Would be great if we could make this a sticky with the other info above as it's very informative, more so than the diagrams I've done and the last Hermann's video as well. It goes very in depth, try not to fall asleep!
Enjoy.
-Chris
I was wondering what kind mine was can you help?

Hello
The smaler one is the testudo hermanni hermanni or western tortoise
ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1499030871.755132.jpg

The much larger one is the eastern tortoise testudo hermanni boettgeri

But then there are a lot of specific hermann tortoises from regions in Europe
