Samantha, that looks like a compact florescent light (coiled) on the right in the photo.
Can you post photos of your lighting?
You may be able to stop a serious issue before it starts.
The type of light I'm referring to causes blindness in tortoises....Though MOST pet shops sell them.

Two quick reasons, Glendalk.
1)Russian tortoises can climb mesh and wire.
2)You will never be able to have the humidity level that you need in such a breezy thing.

I see. He never has climbed it, but I would hate for him to hurt himself falling. I'm going to look into the rubbermaid tub idea. Thank you for the information. So glad I joined this forum. The folks at the pet store give me lots of false info. Again, thanks!)

That UVB light is indeed the type that cause eye problems in tortoises.
Please don't use it and replace it with either a strip florescent or use a MVB for both heat and UVB.
I'm sorry. SO many new members have these bulbs.
Do a search on compact coil florescent bulbs and read if you need convincing.

You can use a MERCURY VAPOR LAMP for UVB and heat. Or you can use a strip florescent light.
I have an 18" Reptiglo 5.0. But a strip florescent doesn't supply much heat. And you'd still need your other heat lamp.

I can't say.
I think once the eyes get burned, it's permanent.
I sure hope my baby is okay or im gonna cry. He seems to be able to see and he never runs into the glass and watches me when i walk around my room. I just hope a store will be open tomarrow
