I found this baby tortoise (at least I think it is) in my backyard in Laredo, Texas. I'm not sure as to what the species is and would like to know how to care for it or where to place it if I cannot give it the proper care. Could really use your help!! Its about 2in. tail to head.

Thanks!!

Looks like a gopher tortoise . They are protected in Texas . You are not aloud to take them out of the wild . You should look but don't touch .

that's a native species it some places and i believe texas is one it's illegal to even pick them up

to many people take them out of there natural habitat if i were you i'd release these guys aren't doing that great in the wild other wise they'd be in the pet trade

So take a step back and walk away. It'll be damn hard, but you'll live. ;)

Thanks for clarifying! I really appreciate it! It's sad to know these guys are listed as a threatened species.

You'll feel better if you do what's right and someday you'll remember about the tort and feel great that you made the right thing . Have a great tort day .

In your back yard? Is your yard fenced? Do you have dogs that live in that back yard? Is the tortoise in danger where it is? If not in danger and if the tort can readily come and go in your yard then you can simply enjoy the tort :) you can also set out a source of water (perhaps a planned water hose into a dirt mud hole for the tort....water is usually a very welcome treat. Do you live in an area that is very urban or in a rural type area?
