My Russian tortoise substrate.

I plan on changing my RT substrate soon, I don't know what the best substrate would be. Currently I am using a mix of Repti bark and Eco earth. My Russian has no problem with eating his substrate or impaction. He likes to dig and poop. Please vote and leave suggestions.

I always go to a hardware store and buy organic peat moss and cypress mulch. It has always worked well for me and many members on here us those as substrates. It's a lot cheaper than buying coir and reptibark

It's fine but items that are marketed towards pets are generally marked up in price. If you have a home improvement store nearby, it may also be called orchid bark. Just make sure you don't get the one with perlite added (it looks like little white pieces of chalk).

Fir Bark = Orchid Bark

You can get a giant 2.0 cubic foot bag of fine grade orchid bark from a gardening center for about $10.

I prefer orchid bark for adult russians.
