The way that my homeana are growing has me baffled somewhat.
These are now around the 60g mark, hatched around 20g.
I don't understand how the new growth is applied, with the redfoots you see new keratin at the boarder seems filling up the crevices to form growth rings. The new keratin is white and as it hardens off changes to the carapace color.
I've never seen new white keratin on these hingebacks, also the scutes look sunken. The scute boarders look raised, as they grow it's as though the sunken part of the scute just gets bigger with no growth rings. Also for the life of me I can't see how these will end up looking like my adults. Can anyone shed any light on how these grow.
Does new keratin on hinges grow the same way as on redfoots?
6 photos of some hatchlings, and 2 photos of adults. Btw these are kept moist at all times.

Very similar to how Manouria emys emys grow. I notice that myself about them.
Yeah, I noticed Will's looked like that, and Julian's spekii. Have you seen any emys grow from hatchling to adult. Any photos?

I have a two year old that is nice and smoothed out. I can try and get photos of both her and the youngsters.

When I go in the garden in the next hour I'll post a picture of my subadult spekii female. Her growth looks very similar to the growth of your homeana

Here are photos of my yearling emys.
You can see on this scute how it's growing. The areola stays low down and new growth is higher as it gets to boarders.
I may be imagining it but on my juvies it looks like the actual areola has got bigger. Still not sure why my adults have level scutes.

Thanks.

Ok, if I'm going to go off topic, it may aswell be in my own thread.
@Will @juli11 @tortadise

Do all tortoises have an egg tooth. I'm convinced none of my homeana hatchlings had an egg tooth.

This growth is completely normal for this species along with many others. Egg teeth are always present even with homeana. They may lose it quite rapidly though. Also they are very shy and reclusive so perhaps it was just very difficult for you see it.

Thanks Kelly. These guys are far from reclusive, they are far more outgoing than my redfoot hatchlings. Completely opposite to my adults. I have some photos somewhere from when they hatched, I dig them out. Where would the egg tooth be, is it possible it could have been right on the tip of the upper beak(sort of an extension on the beak).

The bigger ones definitely have flatter scutes now. None of them will eat fresh greens yet, dried leaves but not fresh.
Diet is mainly fruit, mushrooms and insects.
There all strong and active.
You can also see the sharp drop off developing at the back of the Carapace at around 12 months old.

Could it be that as the underlying bone is developing(providing more support)it levels the center of the scutes?
