Hi all
I'm new to the forum and a first time tortoise mum. I have a 5 month Hermanns tort called Jeffrey, although from what I've read he may turn out to be a Jessica . We'll have to wait and see. I don't have much of a garden, so he will be mainly housed indoors in his table. I take him outside whenever the weather is nice for a few hours. Always open to advice, looking forward to chatting with you all x

Hi Sarah and welcome from Kent UK.

I grew up in Harrogate and @Anyfoot is from Sheffield so there are more Yorkshire folk about :)

Have you read the TFO care guides? They're written by species experts working hard to correct the outdated information widely available on the internet and from pet stores and, sadly, from some breeders and vets too.

We'll be happy to check over your setup for your baby if you want us to. Just post pictures of the enclosure and lighting :)

Thank you for those, I have got a few care sheets from the tortoise table and I got my lil she'll baby from a recommended breeder off the tortoise protection group, so he's had a good start at least
I'll be sure to read through these just to make sure I haven't missed anything as tbh it's been a lot to take in!
I've attached a pic of his table, please feel free to comment... IMG_1886.JPG

Your enclosure is looking pretty good.

I would use a terracotta plant saucer as a water dish as it's less of a tipping hazard. Push it down into the substrate so the rim is level with the surface. If you surround it with stones (slate chips perhaps) they'll help stop substrate being dragged into the water.

Your baby needs consistent warmth and high humidity to be healthy. Controlling either is very difficult in an open table like you have. Babies do better in a closed chamber - something with a lid.

Some people use a mini greenhouse like this over a tortoise table.

What temperatures do you have warm side, cool side, directly under the basking lamp and overnight minimum? It must be 35-37C(95-100F) directly under the basking lamp. A temperature gun type thermometer like this is best for measuring temperatures accurately.

Thank you. Would I put his moss in the box, not sure how to use this. Also I was told the breeder that when his temps were 36C it was far to hot and should be no more than 32c, is this wrong?

Is your " Breeder " a member of the TFO ? You can read the Herman care section of the TFO . ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1496578478.221886.jpg

Hi Sarah and welcome from Wales.
Glad you have found the Tortoise Table website which is a great guide to tort safe plants for food and enclosures.
I would follow the advice from the caresheets on this forum before any other as people here are dedicated to their torts and can offer the most up to date advice available.
Members here also give great tips that will save you money in petshops which are really only interested in profits.
Happy reading and ask as many questions as you like, someone will soon get back to you.
