I think this is a little painted turtle. He has a respiratory infection (opens his mouth wide every so often, floats with is rear end up). He's about 3" from front to back, and was found walking in someone's driveway

I don't take water turtles anymore, however, there's a fellow who has expressed an interest in having two water turtles, so when I received the call about this found turtle I told them I'd take it. I didn't realize it was sick though. Hopefully the R.I. isn't too far advanced and I can clear it up.

I start out by keeping the water warmer than normal and adding Terramycin to the water. If that doesn't work in just a few days, then I have to resort to injections...not something I like to do on young turtles.

This is native species of CA? Do you have some of them your own??

I hope s/he will get better soon.

I am not surprised the little guy is sick, they are not as hardy as red earsm but still a pretty neat species. I had a few many years ago.

No, not a native species. And it's under 4" so I doubt it's a bought turtle. Maybe someone in that neighborhood has a pair of them and they had babies??? And, no, I don't have any painted turtles. My pond has about 4 female RES, several Pacific pond turtles, three Florida softshells and an Argentine side neck.
