I saw this on Craigslist, and wanted to pass it on. These beauties deserve a good home. You can contact the owner Clint Wilder @

FOR SALE:
MALE & FEMALE (PAIR) SULCATA TORTOISES - $800

about the tortoises (also known as African Spur tortoises):
-"Bert" and "Shelly" are our family pets, and we had intended to keep them forever. We are relocating and simply cannot take them with us, so we are looking to find them a new home with a loving family (Bert as in Bert the Turtle (see cartoons on YouTube), and Shelly, well that's obvious :)
-We call them "living yard art" and many of our friends and guests really haven't even seen these cool creatures, and much less have petted and feed any.
-They are wonderful as pets and are very easy to care for. You'll never hear them barking or climbing on your screens or scratching your doors trying to get inside.
-This pair is very healthy and active, and there is no "pyramiding" on their shells like you see in many pet shop animals.

What do they eat?
-Sulcatas are vegetarians. They will eat most anything, except you shouldn't feed them Iceberg lettuce (Iceburg lettuce has no nutritional value, and they simply gorge themselves and eat too much).
-They eat greens such as cabbage, kale, lettuce, turnips, and tomatoes, string beans, pears, apples, watermelons, cantaloupe, cucumbers, squash, well, you get the picture. Just make sure to cut their food into smaller pieces because they don't have teeth to crush up larger pieces.
-We actually go to two different grocery stores, and they donate many fruits, veggies, and greens that are getting close to the expiration date. So ask around in your neighborhood and you may end up getting free food (all we had to do was to show the stores' produce manager pictures of the tortoises with our kids, and they immediately said "yes" to our food donation request).

-You can also by "tortoise food" which reminds me of dry dog food. The company that makes the best is called Mazuri (they are owned by Purina - see the pictures for what the bag looks like.)
-You can buy bags of the Tortoise Diet from Tractor Supply, Walmart.com, Amazon, in some pet stores, or even buy it directly from Mazuri (http://www.mazuri.com/mazuritortoisediet.aspx). A 25lb bag costs about the same as a bag of good quality dry dog food.

Demeanor and playfullness:
-We bought this pair because we wanted to play with them. Many tortoises, and especially turtles, retract into their shells when they see a shadow or human approaching. What fun is that? These tortoises were reared being hand fed and really like human interaction. -You can pet their heads, and they are very friendly and like to follow you around sometimes. They simply want to be a part of the family :))

Care and feeding:
-We feed them once a day, usually in the mornings. Remember they are cold-blooded, so they'll start to move around after the sun comes up and starts warming everything up.
-In the summer months, we "soak" them in about 3-4" inches of water for about 1/2 an hour every other week or so. We have a garden tub, but we've seen some of our friends use the small plastic "kiddy pools." You don't have to do this, but it seems to clean them off a bit and softens up their skin. They aren't swimmers obviously, but they seem to like it.

Size and age:
-Both the male and female are right at 8 years old.
-Their shells measure 10" - 10-1/4" wide, 15" in length, and are about 8"-9" tall (see pictures).
-The male, Bert, weighs 25 pounds, and the female, Shelly, weighs in at 23 pounds (in the pictures, the male is the slightly larger one)

Why you shouldn't buy hatchlings or small Sulcatas:
-The baby Sulcata tortoises are just so cute, and you can sell your hatchlings very easily because they make real neat pets. The kids love them!
-However, if you have children, remember that it will take 6-10 years for the Sulcatas to "grow up." Many kids lose interest quickly because they remain so small for a long time
-Also, the smaller tortoises have a hard time. Racoons, possums, cats, dogs, crows, and birds of prey see them as an easy meal, so it makes it's very challenging sometimes to raise them to a larger size.

Price?
-We think this is a great deal. Check around on the internet and you'll see the very high prices for a female Sulcata - we're selling a healthy breeding pair for less than the price you'd find for a female alone (don't forget to add air freight/cargo if you are considering buying from out West)

How to contact us:
-Just send us an email or call us at 678-778-6768. If you get our voicemail, please leave a message. Thanks :)))

Moving and they "simply can't keep their beloved family pets"? I bet they're keeping their dog … at least they're trying to sell them
