Hi,
I am new here, just found out about this forum recently and i been reading through the forum, i have a question about my star tortoise shell.
i have this star tortoise for 12 years now. I have never notice her being sick, she is very active in the day, pushing flower pots all over. Her diet consist of mostly:

Green leaf lettuce,
Wheat grass,
Spineless cactus pad(2-3 times a week),
ZOOMED for grassland Tortoise,
JBL Herbil,
recently i also started planting hibiscus for her.
I am still looking for more plant n weeds that i can plant at home

Few years ago, i noticed her shell had some abnormal development. Uneven pyramiding, with rots or holes around the shell (im not sure about it). She basked in the sun daily, is eating normal, poops almost everyday big and solid:D, (no worm or bugs found in there to naked eyes).
Is her shell problem a serious case? is there anything i can do better to help?

Thanks for any advise =)

Hi Jason, and welcome to the Forum!

One usually sees this kind of abnormal growth on a turtle or tortoise that is being fed incorrectly and isn't getting UVB. I've seen it a lot on box turtles kept in the house all the time. Your diet could stand a bit more variety, but it looks like the nutrition is ok. Sorry, I don't know what to tell you.

Take a look at the list of foods shown in our leopard care sheet (leopards and stars can be kept the same way). You'll find it pinned at the top of our Leopard section here on the Forum.

Where are you? Most often these sort of shell anomalies are caused by very low humidity and excessive dryness as a baby.

Thanks for the replies. will there be any chance that her shell be able to recover from it?

The damage to the shell is done but better attention to watering/hydration should improve this tortoise's life and any future growth. The beak looks like it could use trimming or filing, too.
