I live in south florida and found this little baby. I think maybe it's a gopher. Can you keep them as pets?

I'm not sure either. Maybe @tortadise can help. If it is a gopher you need to let it go where you found it.

A picture of the underside including the tail would be helpful

It's a Gopher and in Florida I believe it's illegal to touch them but moving it from the road was the right thing to do. @ZEROPILOT can shed more light on Florida laws.

It is illegal to interfere in any way.
I have in an Emergency situation.
Just do what is needed and do it quickly. And leave the tortoise in a safe spot as close to where you found it as possible. If not exactly where.

    You did good.
The state let's contractors and builders place a condo on top of a burrow full of them for a small fee. But won't let a resident keep one from being crushed by traffic.

Hi and welcome to the Forum! Yes, as has already been said, that IS a gopher tortoise - Gopherus polyphemus. I'm not real sure of the laws regarding the gopher tortoise other than it is illegal to mess with them.
