Can my tortoise get lonely by himself

Hermmy lives in a rather large tank considering his size and I'm wondering if tortoises can get lonely or is it better for them to be alone?

In fact, they are solitary creatures and actually get very stressed by another tortoise competing for everything

No. He's just pleased as punch to be the only one in his realm...the king of his castle, so to speak.
