The vertebral scutes on that last one are very unique. Never seen fusion like that before.

Can you give me a brief explanation of the term Hets? Thank you.
Genes come
in pairs, like socks. All gene pairs are either homozygous or heterozygous.

Homozygous = the two genes in a gene pair are the same. A homozygous tortoise
may have either a normal or mutant phenotype. It depends on the genes in the
gene pair.
Heterozygous = the two genes in a gene pair are NOT the same. A
heterozygous tortoise may have either a normal or mutant phenotype. It depends
on the genes in the gene pair. Something to keep in mind when dealing with punnett squares and
simple recessive genetics is that the numbers involved are
theoretical.

Hi. So how do we know the 2 hets in this thread are not homozygous with mutant phenotype. Will look on your site when I get home and have another read on this subject.

There is only one Het pictured....(the normal colored looking one - which is Het for Albino)
Albino and Hypomelanistic are a recessive gene....
Example breeding
Albino x Albino = 100% visual Albino babies
Albino x Het for Albino = will give you a percentage/chance of a "visual" Albino within the clutch.

There are two hets pictured. They are 66% possible het and came from both parents being het for albino.

This is a bit more clear now. So how do you know they are hets. Is it because you know the parents history.

Oppsss...my Bad ... I see there are two different Hets ....hard to keep your eyes from wandering staring at the albino.;).. as Chris mentioned very neat looking fusion...on the one.

I'm a big fan of aberrant scutes, so besides being very beautiful, all three of your tortoises are interesting to me, but especially the last picture.

So Mr JD. I can see how this becomes obsessive.

So am I right in saying there is no difference in appearance from a hets and a regular tort.
But the hets is carrying a dominant and recessive gene and not just the dominant gene that the regular tort is carrying.
Also is it just a coincidence that these hets are splits. Can some hets have the normal classic scute appearance?

BTW Are there albino cherries and northern reds out there.
