    Fun at the Zoo

I think there were about 10 tortoises in the Star enclosure and 3 pairs were "fighting". There were nice Red and Yellow foot enclosures, several Snapping turtles, one was gigantic, a very nice Pancake enclosure and several more that I'm forgetting at the moment. I really like their reptile...

    Fun at the Zoo

We went to the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium this weekend here in Phoenix. We really enjoy this zoo and now that we own a Russian tortoise, we had a better appreciation of the variety and care of the tortoises there. The only awkward part was telling my daughter that the tortoises were...

    New Russian Table

I'm almost finished with Rogue's table. I converted a 6x3 entertainment center. There's an Arcadia D3 6% T8 Reptile Lamp and an 5000k light and I have a 90 Watt Chromalux halogen flood basking bulb on a dimmer for the heat. For grazing he has 2 dandelion plants, a kale and a butter lettuce. I...

    Temperature Concerns

I'll replace the clamp lamp right away and get it properly hung. I'll also move his hide to the warm end. What should I use inside the humid hide to retain moisture? It sounds like I either need to cover, at least partially, the cage or add another heat source. Would adding a che be advised...

    Temperature Concerns

I am concerned with the temperatures in my Russian's enclosure. Using a temperature gun I am testing the temperatures in the cage. I have 95 on the stone under the heat lamp, 72 under the fluorescent light but it is only 67 on the other end which is where I have his hide. Should I move the...

    Introducing Rogue

We picked up our adult male Russian from ATC yesterday. My daughter loves him and just sits by his cage. The cage is finally complete less the plants. I have lots potted up and I'm waiting for them to become established before putting them in the enclosure. I'm looking forward to many happy...

    New Plants for Indoor Enclosure

I was just going to let him graze once the mix sprouts, set up two 3 foot window boxes and rotate out the planters every couple weeks. I started some Spider plants, Mexican Heather, Ice plant and Purple Lamium from clippings today and will add them in a few months. I also found organically...

    New Plants for Indoor Enclosure

I'm going to use potted plants and rotate them in and out to either regrow or recuperate depending on if their eaten or trampled. I'm going to grow the testudo mix in a 3 foot window box planter and rotate that as well. Do the tortoises use the spider plant as cover or is it more for decoration?

    New Plants for Indoor Enclosure

The ones I already purchased I know I cannot use. I'm going to take cuttings from them and start new plants. The organically grown plants I'd like to purchase have never been treated with any pesticides or chemicals. I'm checking on the soil composition from the grower. If they used soil with...

    New Plants for Indoor Enclosure

Hello All, I went a little crazy at the garden center today. I used The Tortoise Table's plant database and only chose safe plants from the green section. I am now reading that I cannot use any of them in the enclosure right away because of the pesticides that were likely used. Almost...

    Tortoise Table Materials

This is good info to have. I started working on the table and decided that it would be better to mount the lights inside the cage so that I can cover it with screening because of the cat. This will put the lighting closer to 12" from the substrate and allow for a more solid mount for the...

    Tortoise Table Materials

Would the 3-4 hours be sufficient (I'm in Phoenix and will also get him outside several times a week for roaming time in the backyard) or should I go with the D3+ 12% T8 (the first post) left on for 12 hours? I found a T8 shop light fixture that houses two 48" bulbs that I am planning on...
