Hey y'all, I'm looking for some advice on feeding protein to my wood turtle, Maya. She is completely uninterested in worms and dubia. I have only had her for a couple weeks, and she has come really far so I'm hoping in time she will come around but any advice appreciated!
I got her from...
Oh, that makes me so mad! Here in Texas the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has an Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program, where there is a 10 day fisheries closure every year, during which any crab trap left in the water is pulled and disposed of. Wondering if other states do anything...
That's very helpful, thank you! I'm in Corpus Christi - so it still gets beastly hot but we have a nice coastal breeze year round, which helps. And I have a shaded yard. Hopefully I can find a young tort to start with, as you suggested. :)
Hey y'all, I have been considering adding a Greek tortoise to the family. I know the babies do well in a higher humidity environment... however as they are native to a more arid climate, would it be appropriate to house an adult outdoors in a humid climate? I live in coastal south Texas, a...
I'm also interested in the same thing... I have actually wasted about $300 over the course of the past year trying to build enclosure for my redfoots. Everything I have tried to build I have failed miserably at, I should have just spent money up front to buy something ready made. The poor things...
Something like this? My Leo absolutely loves it, she climbs on it every day. I was going to put some succulents on the large ledge, having read that Leos don't climb, but changed my mind when I saw that she is all over it all the time! I'm working on a second background now that will be a same...
Their natural wild habitat is arid woodlands and rocky desert, not the loose sand deserts people typically think of. An appropriate 'natural habitat' would either be a bioactive setup or one with hard packed substrate and tons of rocks/crevices.
I have pulled paper towel out of my beardies...
Mine are not seniors, but I love them. So entertaining, especially because they are complete opposite in personality. They are housed separately. Sunny is SO SWEET and gentle, she's my angelbaby.
Princess is a TOTAL BUTTHEAD. Every time I put my hand in the enclosure he comes charging out of...
Please do NOT add walnut or calcium sand!!! That could lead to the death of your beardie from impaction. A great resource is beardeddragonforum.com for informaton- it's set up just like this forum and has awesome, informative folks.
Your guy looks underfed to me, possibly dehydrated - hard to...
My painted turtles are apparently much more ferocious! Any pleco I put in there i know has a limited lifespan - until they get caught and eaten (eventually I gave up on it). And other fish don't stand a chance. Even my crawdad got eaten. :(
I get frozen bloodworms - they are in the aquarium section of pet stores. And small/medium crickets - pinhead are super small, the turtles have trouble catching/eating them that tiny. I release them, live, on top of the water. Once they are wet they can't jump out, but they scoot across the...
Thanks for the updates!!! Can you feed her bloodworms? I don't know much about mud turtles, but my turtles go crazy for them and they are brightly colored which may help.... my turtles also go crazy for live crickets. :)
I definitely agree with the necessity of using an exotic vet!!! I recommend the VCA animal hospitals - they are just as you described with the incredibly detailed questionnaire and vets who ask detailed, knowledgeable questions - lighting, diet, substrate, etc.
I have had to take in a rat with...
Oh, I'm so jealous! In Texas you are not allowed to keep them as pets, which is so disappointing. I do see them in the wild fairly often though, which is fun.
Though I just noticed you said musk and painted - I wouldn't mix species that have different habitat requirements. Painteds are super aquatic and like to swim, are strong swimmers - I have had them and they are compaable to red ear sliders in lifestyle. While I have not owned musk turtles, they...
I have had lots of turtles and none seem to have issue with glass walls - which now that I think about it is odd because other reptiles, including some of my pets, have been bothered by the glass and I have had to put up a visual barrier. Huh. My turtles seem to actually like it because they can...
So I have not used the tub, but the reason for that is I feel like with the glass I can visually monitor water quality and spot poop, which I siphon out regularly. All the tubs I have seen are black, I feel like it would be much more difficult to see algae growth, poo, etc.
If you want more...
Definitely a dominance / threat thing. One of my redfoots, the smaller one, does it. She is also the one that rams me and bites. She is housed alone, bought young from a reputable breeder, I've had her for over a year, never gave her a bad experience but man she is feisty as hell!!! When she...
